I love The Kinks, but The Who were one of my favorite bands early on and there are very few bands if any from that era who I would vote for when up against The Who.

Broke out Quadrophenia a couple days ago and was reminded how much ass The Who kicked. Even their dumb songs just kick an incredible amount of ass and they play the hell out of them.

I appreciate The Kinks in a distant way but they have no visceral aesthetic appeal for me.

Some long instrumental passages in Quadrophonia remind me of my mom listening to Manheim Steamroller's Christmas album. Such corny synth diddling. I feel like you could cut half of that album and a very solid core would remain. I know there's a greater concept at work but come on.

The Who are stranger and less predictable to my ears. They managed a good long run with parts that shouldn't have gone together. In that that, they remind o another fav, the Damned.
