And on that note:

Boston hardcore was mostly dogshit, but we had Jerry's Kids, Negative FX, and Siege.
Yes to all of this. And I’ll put Is This My World? up as my favorite H/C record. There’s an element to it that I hear that’s almost psychedelic or free jazz. It wasn’t til I saw them play a couple reunion shows that really hit me, and it pretty much melted my mind. FUs had a similar vibe sometimes but they also had the cock rock lunkhead thing as well, with mixed results.

I only saw Siege once and they were great too. This was at the Mid East some Sunday matinee in like 91, and I’m pretty sure Seth Putnam was singing. I dunno, I was young and I didn’t know AxCx (another great Boston band!?) at the time. Anyway after Siege played some punk kid grabbed a wooden chair and smashed it to bits as some kind of tension release which I could empathize with.

Come (on).
They’ve been playing shows again. Oddly, no Boston show which would be convenient for me, as well as very appropriate! But there are April dates in Portland ME and Keene NH that I could probably get to.

Truly great band and an influence on me when I was trying to find my own musical voice.
The first gig me and my brother went to that we chose ourselves - we *know* what going to a late '80's Eric Clapton gig is like - was Dinosaur Jr, supported by Bettie Serveert, who were fine, and Come, who eclipsed the main act. We saw them twenty years later for the reunion tour and they were as great as we remembered, such a great band. Really nice people too, from all appearances and a few words swapped after shows. I'm delighted they're playing shows again.

The first songs of theirs I heard were on a Peel Session I taped a few days before the gig, which this thread has had me discover are now available to buy on their bandcamp page here, tracks 5-6; I remember the rollicking feedback of "Sharon vs. Karen" thrilled me - it still does.

The Proletariat.

To their detriment they were part of the shitty Boston hardcore scene but sound nothing like the rest of them. Absolutely essential and criminally overlooked band.

Most of these are more 00s than 90s but:

morphine
club d'elf
karate
the wicked farleys
helms
victory at sea
ho-ag
neptune

a handful of my own bands I won't list, and a ton of others I can't remember cause I'm still on my first cup of coffee.

Mention of Dinosaur Jr. sort of implies this band, though they were one of my favorites in the 90s so they deserve an explicit mention:

Sebadoh

Spent a lot of time listening to Bakesale my senior year in high school in 1994-1995.

This thread is good timing as Drop Nineteens are (is?) reuniting.

Another Boston contributor to the American side of the shoegaze deal, The Swirlies:
