Always thought 1000 hurts had a slightly different vibe to the other albums. Both the material and recording sound unusual. A bit like a statement from a professor/janitor going postal.
Terraform for pure enjoyment and the first song is the best song. Recording is the best. Agree about House Full of Garbage bogging it down just a little.
Re: The Podium: Albini band studio full-lengths.
22Ummm, haven't listened to BB recently enough to consider those albums.
Nuns has some of my favorite playing anywhere. I love how BB had lots of harsh sounds and all, but this album really packs in harsh noise but like, more up my alley. Like, I wish I could crash out some sounds like that with just guitar and cranked amp.
The first three Shellac albums all had shit tons of plays from me. Terraform has some of my favorite songs. Action Park has an energy that made a huge impact on me when I first heard it (I think it was the first full Albini album I was exposed to). Hurts just has a special sound that I like more than most albums from anyone. Not all the songs are my favorite on their own, but as an album it just works. Also some of my favorite Albini guitaring that I could actually play back in the day, but it is mostly how clear and great all the instruments sound. Guitar and bass tones mingle together in a really nice way.
Greyhound is great, but it is kinda like the album was not bluffing to the noisy kids in the back seat and totally turned that car around and went back home. It sure does grind that thing to a halt. Some fantastic song, and then some more songs. Unfortunately, the fantastic songs have other versions that I just like better. Like that Steady As She Goes version on the old youtube video with out of sync audio.
Dude Incredible. This one sure does rock, but just doesn't edge up there. Maybe because, like Greyhound, I got it when it was new rather than doing some deep dive in more formative years. I like the subject matter focus on technical things like surveyors and stuff and not as much do do, dicks, and fucking (not that those are bad things in songs). Cartography and shit is cool. I used to work at place that did a lot of that stuff. I got a cool book about map theory a few years ago, but I haven't gotten around to starting it. But also bikes seem cool and I guess monkeys sure be fucking -- and assholes too it seems. How come I never paid attention to lyrics much before this one came out? Naive? Neural divergence? Lazy? Who can can care, really?
