This is aiming at something, but I'd go more specific with the band Merauder and their 'Master Killer' album. There's a place beyond dumb for it.

I just had to look this up on youtube. Yikes. Definitely beyond KLD, as there is no sense of self awareness at all. They are just literally stupid.

Like Pantera. Can we make fun of Pantera in this thread? I would like to do this. Pantera are silly and I enjoy making fun of them. Making fun of Pantera is one of my favourite things. Especially since they wore Big Short Pants, and were called pant era. Literally the era of the pant. And they started in spandex.

This is a fantastic observation, but too many good riffs. Too many good songs. In spite of multiple waffles I'd find reasons to bat for them.

Similarities:

.Barely musically coherent, attempting v. simple songs w/ strong melodic vocal hooks. Minimal musical evolution based on concessions to their respective marketplaces as their careers faltered (Misfits made muddy hardcore badly (even w/ Robo on the drums!), Kiss went glam-ish when Vinny Vincent joined).

. Lyrically obsessed w/ adolescent juvenalia (y'know, "I REALLY identify w/ horror movies" vs "I just want to PARTY all the time" - not exactly realms of sophistication and contemplation).

. Had to overcompensate for the above by stressing image / iconography / live spectacle to a cartoonish degree but MUSICALLY were unusually sloppy on the stage.

. Their merch game and its quantity to quality ratio.

And, as I said, I enjoy the Misfits and dumb ≠ bad. I am not saying their audiences are dumb. But Misfits are as dumb as Kiss. Easily.

And y'all are 100% off on Merauder - the first 2 albums are masterpieces of aggression and instinct: Celtic Frost riffs, Cro-Mags attitude, Puerto Rican swing. This is one of their slower tunes, but it just CRUSHES:



Of course they're so testosterone addled that I wouldn't trust them to open a packet of crisps without destroying the contents. Cavemen levels of dumb that boarder on social irresponsibility.

But not as dumb as the Misfits or Kiss.

Most NYHC was crap, but Sheer Terror brought it.

M.H., your list of 'similarities' there seems like a good description of Metallica once they left the '80s, would love to throw them on this fire.

Kiss may not have been Rush, but they could play circles around The Misfits. Danzig made it all work.
