I don’t care for RHCP, but the fact that Kiedis became a major pop star despite not being able to sing and despite writing yabba-dabba-doo lyrics kinda makes me think *better* of him, not worse.
Thinking about this more. . .

As much as I dislike RHCP, it’s impossible to deny that they’re a distinctive band, with character, and that Kiedis is part of that. Replace him with a better singer, and the whole thing falls apart. He brings an essential Californian him-bo vibe to the band.

Vince Neil wanted to be Robin Zander and so, so wasn’t Robin Zander. Motley Crue would’ve traded up for Zander in two seconds.

I listened to the Olivia Rodrigo song, and it sounded like generic Disney rock with one unusual chord choice. The backing band is bland session stuff. Replace her with anyone else from the Disney stable, and nothing changes at all.

Just tidying-up the thread. I'll take all of Kiedis' creamy beaverisms never to hear Vince in a live setting again. Luckiest dude in rock that one.
Okay, but hear me out. I think Neil could probably stumble through Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic but Kiedis would be unable to squeal through Dr. Feelgood. On pure athleticism Neil has him beat.

This is the three way rock off battle TV hadn't realized it needed!
If we’re going in that direction, I think we can drop Olivia from the debate.

Add Tom DeLonge from blink-182.

But now we’re digressing into a separate thread entitled “Worst singer ever”.

Haven’t we already done that? Maybe an old thread needs to be bumped. Am on my phone and don’t have time to search for it at the moment.

Also: waiting for a vehement defense of Vince Neil from someone.

Anything is possible in a recording studio. Unfortunately, I have seen Vince sing live unadorned by engineering magic too many times in high school. He's terrible. The worst. Even back then I knew he was the weakest link in a band full of wink links, save for Tommy's skill on the tubs. I've never seen RHCP live, no plans to, but I bet AK can get through "Slice of Your Pie" or "Sticky Sweet" unscathed.

Look at me dropping deep Crüe tracks like nobody's business!

I saw them some time in early 1988 when they were touring Uplift... They sucked, bad. They must've been gakked. They spent most of their set hitting on women in the audience, trying to entice them into some post-show fun. Lame-o. Fishbone also played and their set was fuckin tight. Very enjoyable.

I think I saw them again around '92 at Lollapalooza, just out of high-school. As I recall that wasn't too shabby for what it was. Even then, their schtick got old pretty quickly for me. And that's coming from someone who enthusiastically enjoyed Primus then.

Creepy story from the Lanegan book (who was a junkie and dirtbag at that point):
Well, that was an interesting read.

Holy shit.

I almost feel bad (?!) for Anthony Kiedis. Nah, that's not the right word.

It helps explain some stuff.
