Bedhead, no competition, no insult to those involved. No better band among their contemporaries.

Other -
Idaho.
For me, it goes roughly...
Jimi Hendrix - Edward Van Halen - Jeff Martin/Ronald Jones
That said?
Maximum "Big Up..." to Bruce Kaphan. That guy is a straight up national treasure.

Worth the mention though...
In the couple of instances that Medicine swerved over into this lane?
Probably just as good as any of the "Classic Coke..." instances of the genre.

Arguably, but my brain served up "kinda shoegaze" as the default genre tag, a wiki-refresh sez "noise pop".
Ultimately too energetic / non-melodramatic I think.
Great band though; I had no idea Medicine was the brainchild of the Savage Republic drummer (INCREDIBLE band).

Not my thing .
Bedheads debut was cool.
Low has some beatiful songs.
But not a fan, generally speaking.

Low.
Saw Codeine a few years ago, was a terrific show. The songs were SO SLOW. Brokaw would do stick clicks to count them in and it was like:
click
....
click
*checks watch*
click
*tumbleweed blows through*
click
aaaaaaaaannnnnnnnd....go.
Many years ago my good friend and former FM Dr Ew opened for Kozelik solo, I was Dr Ew's roadie, which mainly meant "ride home". Fucking Kozelik played Every Song Ever Written, his set went on FOREVER, he played for like 3 hours. OMG dude please STOP already I want to go HOME.

Does Timco count here? No? Too much energy and too many ear-killing guitar solos?
Or maybe Seam? Not quite?
Even though they helped birth all this stuff (AMC, especially), Toiling Midgets are way too rocking and druggy, I'd assume?
Fucking stupid genre name.
Codeine, if you must. Liked 'em a lot live circa the second LP.

While I guess "Shoegaze..." is where the gut reaction is, I always just kind of saw them as playing "Medicine..." music.
As for "A Short Happy Life..." and "Christmas Song..." they mostly stuck out because they were seriously slow tunes ending each side of
Shot Forth Self Living
if you owned it on cassette.
Seems like there might have been one tune along that line on each of the other records in that first run.

Bedhead were one of the all-time great bands, and they take it for me no contest. I have a lot of time for anything the K bros do, and still hope to one day hear their unreleased jazz-standards alb.
Low and Codeine are also among the all-time great bands, and I'd take either of them over 99.99% of other bands.
I used to love Red House Painters, but I've fallen off. I don't have a lot of time for Kozelek's post-RHP work, and he's a gross creep.
I could never meet American Music Club halfway, despite trying repeatedly over many years. The work doesn't speak to me.
Slowcore/sadcore isn't a real thing.
BEDHEAD.

Acetone could be included in this category, if it actually existed. For me, they'd be the winner.
