Yeah! It was back in my drinking days so some of it is a bit hazy, but I remember having a blast. Shame they tore down the old Masquerade... lot of great memories there growing up.

Same! I used to go see movies with my parents there when it was the Excelsior Mill...WAY back. And my first show as a teen was the Ramones there in 1989 (?). I remember calling my parents from the payphone at the bottom of the stairs to come pick me up after. I was 15!

Not a fan, even ones I end up playing (these are obv on a diff scale than the Bumpershoots or DesertDaze type things).

Tedious, always too loud, never can find a good bathroom to nuke after eating too much shitty food.

I do like the whole 'drop in, play on this drumset that is already set up for you, go ahead and leave if you'd like' routine, but that's not as a spectator.

In the UK quite a few went bust or said they were stopping this year. Speaking to someone who does the finances for an entirely volunteer-run event, he said that costs for everything had at least doubled, and in some cases increased much more than that. Because of the nature of their event they just made a small loss: everyone pays (including volunteers), and they have a lot of technical people who can handle stuff like electrical wiring in a field. Commercial festivals are in serious trouble, though.

Woah, what an incredible first show! Way cooler choice than my first time there (I was very into Ska at 13). Really thankful looking back to have had a place that mostly did all-ages shows and booked so many great bands. They'd torn it down and moved to Underground a bit after I moved from Atlanta, but hopefully that's still the case.

It is. I see shows there all the time.

Nowadays I wouldn't be caught dead at the lame starfucker event called Coachella but once upon a time they actually had their trip together.

The biggest plus is that the festival takes place on a polo field. That means manicured lawn everywhere, even the parking lot. Shit, I walked around barefoot half the time.

At Coachella 2004 I saw Radiohead, The Pixies, Desert Sessions, Kraftwerk, Erase Errata, Q And Not U, The Cure, Flaming Lips, Belle And Sebastian, Le Tigre, Basement Jaxx, Stereolab, Junior Senior, Broken Social Scene, Beck and The Evens (in the folk tent!). Wilco cancelled because Jeff Tweedy went to rehab.

In 2006 I saw My Morning Jacket, Common, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Eagles Of Death Metal, Deerhoof, Massive Attack, Depeche Mode, Atmosphere, Tool, Sleater-Kinney, Bloc Party, Ted Leo, Dungen and Daft Punk.

Two days of port-o-johns, sleeping on the ground (or in a car) and not showering was a small price to pay for the quality and quantity of the music. Then again this was 20 years ago when I was pushing 40 and not 60.

And if being around large groups of people makes you uncomfortable you should probably take more acid.

Only PRF festivals.
