Wal-Marts are much bigger in FL, and I use to go to one up the road from me at least once a week.
Since moving to NJ 8 months ago, there's only 1 that's about 5 minutes away, and I haven't been in it yet. I haven't missed it.
Wal-Mart has a smell. You know, the Wal-Mart smell. Y'all know what I'm talking about?

I work at a grocery store. We had to sit through this stupid thing one time for customers. It was pretty lame, but they had some statistics from some local grocery stores. They chose about 45 items, went to wal mart, our store, and a couple of other grocery stores and looked up the prices then normalized them to 100 dollars at our store. Wal mart came in at $95, we were at 100, albertsons was 105, and another local chain was 102. I'm sure they picked the items to slightly favor us, but anyways the savings of 5 dollars for every 100 isn't too significant. I would imagine a larger family spends maybe that much a week. In the long run they maybe save 250 dollars a year.
Another thing too is grocery stores tend to have more better sales then wal mart. If you aren't brand loyal you could likely spend less at a normal grocery store. A lot of people use the reasoning though that both companies are large corporations that generally don't care for their employees. While it may be slightly true, a normal grocery store is going to pay their employees better and give them much better insurance then wal mart ever would.

Seriously? My bf and I spend about $160 a week at meijer. And that's just two of us. And we're pretty frugal. I'm sure a family of four with growing kids spend over $400 a week.
I don't go to walmart though. It's all about meijer.

The awesomest place on earth. It's where us small town midwesterners go for fun on a Saturday night*.

OK I get it...it's kind of like a Wal-Mart in Appalachia...a big fuckin' family reunion. Nice.

29In my experience, going to independent vegetable or ethnic grocery stores will save you a lot of money, especially on produce.
I'm always amazed when I go to Jerry's in Niles IL or Caputo's in Des Plaines at how much cheaper their prices are on a lot of things.
Fiesta Mart, at I think various locations around Chicago, can be very cheap as well.

It's a midwestern chain. I've seen stores in Michigan, Wisconsin, and now Illinois.
I like the Woodman's stores I've seen in Wisconsin.
