I have all the early records and if you don't like Cramps and Byrds than yeah, I understand, but MBV obviously didn't stop there and we wouldn't still be talking about them if they had.
Ecstasy, Strawberry Wine, Feed Me With Your Kiss, You Made Me Realise, Isn't Anything, Tremolo, Glider and Loveless are all fairly representational works. Especially for when they were made.
This band (or guy) pioneered a style of guitar playing and the wake of it inspired not only copycat artists but an entire movement in music with quality bands as well as those beyond the mega-genre of rock/pop.
It's disappointing that nothing definitive has been released since Loveless, but calling the band 'CRAP' for what might've been is ridiculous.
Not to mention they pulled off most of the technical recording that Loveless is live. I was young when I saw them in '92, but it remains the most affecting and disorienting live band I can recall witnessing.
Like any band, there are things about them you can knock. My opinion is just as anecdotal as anyone's, but some of the negative comments in this thread seriously lack perspective. Based on what I've read, some peoples' record collections seem to BEGIN in 1991.

I've been going thru a phase of semi-hating many of the bands that made me want to play back when I was a teenager. Particularly Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine. I mean, Mascis hasn't made any real artistic progress since Green Mind in '91 and Loveless came out in what, '92?
I used to love My Bloody Valentine but there are parts of Loveless that sound almost uncomfortably close to what I would imagine a fusion of The Jesus and Mary Chain, Dinosaur jr/Sentridoh and... Clannad or something. Crap on paper. In reality not crap tho' but the idea that is was so hard to come up with a follow up to equal or better it seems incredible with hindsight. Loveless has some great things on it but it's overrated.
I actually really like the earlier Sunny Sundae Smile - Ecstacy stuff.
My Bloody Valentine as a whole .... um...not crap.

I remember hearing Loomer on the radio when Loveless first came out and it sounded like nothing else I had ever heard, just a whisper of a vocal melody almost totally obscured by roaring noise, as if the tape was being being consumed by flames during recording or some other such overblown simile.
I wish the record still sounded like that to me these days. I would love it if they put out a "total-wall-of-noise" remix of Loveless.

Loveless is a grossly overrated record. The sound of it is orgasmic. Half of the songs on it are average-to-shockingly-boring.

As opposed to the very straight forward rock of the currently released version of Loveless.

I just doesn't do it for me in the same way anymore, you know? I feel I need a higher dose these days.

I hear ya, I'm just kidding around. Im up for more delay(backwards or forword) and reverb on anything, anyday.

"Soon" still sends chills up my spine.
"Glider" too.
I still have my 7" single of it, so when I finally get that jukebox I can stick it in there.
