22First off, let me address the Plano thing. In short, Fuck you. I figure you're a pretty smart guy Matt. You should strive for something more informed than a Dallas Observer style mentality towards the suburbs. Your studio is in Argyle for instance. Not exactly a cultural hotspot. And it happens to be close to the unjustified snob capital of North Texas:Denton. Most of Denton is college kids who are living on their parents dime. I know no such way of life. Neither do most of my friends from Plano. Respect the bands that have worked so hard around here? Give me a break. After enduring pointless snobbery towards my friends and I simply for being from some city that they don't like in theory? I can give you examples of being treated like shit simply for being from Plano. At clubs, by bands, scenesters etc. I don't think most of the guys I know from "proper" Dallas bands are starving. Besides, I hear Congleton won't play locally for less than a thousand dollars. That low rent white trash you despise sure pays you handsomely. Pretty demanding business from a "hobby" musician. Or putting your band on a compilation sponsored by Coca fucking Cola. I hope your music is just a hobby if you'd disgrace songs you care about by releasing them on discs with a Coke logo stamped on it. That's another thing about bands I knew and know. They wouldn't sink that low just so high schoolers could hear them. It's for the kids right? Fuck that Buzz Oven nonsense. Such a big deal that three shitty bands will play some all-ages shows like they should anyway. Man, thanks for honoring the community with your selfless act. I thought Kill Rock Stars had better judgement than to work with a band who had a Coke sponsored release. I'd say you are very much part of a scene. The Good Records, Denton/Dallas snob circuit took good care of you. You opened for the Toadies for crying out loud. Chunklet shouldn't be compared to Mad magazine simply because they're funny and have used that format for an issue. Henry Owings didn't even write the comment we're discussing. Chunklet is very observant about a lot of problems in the national scene. But I guess you'd discredit smart people for being from a certain part of Georgia just like you would discredit people for being from a certain part of DFW. I have said nothing of Austin or Houston. Those are problems for someone else to think about. And as for my statement about blaming the bands I wasn't suggesting that they tour to sell tens of thousands of records. I am very familiar with the pain of bands that tour and accomplish nothing. They just should have at least tried so someone but a select few would even know they existed. We do have venues that nurture independent music but they are just full of dress up bands pretending to be their favorite national indie acts rather than trying to develop something slightly more original. I said slightly. I don't expect the next movement to come from here. I won't even bother to name the bands that were great from here. I'm not trying to be cool and obscure but as connected as you both are, you probably haven't heard of them. Maybe you should venture out past Mockingbird Station.

23clearly this is just a case of a big chip on your shoulder. i bear no ill feelings because i have been playing in bands from this area for well over ten years and know how frustrating it can be. however you are basically spreading lies at this point and this has nothing to do with deerhoof. i'm sure some people must be perplexed by this thread. so i just want to wipe the shit off a few things and if you want to talk to me feel free to email me directly.
number one: i have never in my entire life asked for a thousand dollars to do ANY show ever. who told you such retarded lies? my band like any other band gets a cut of the door when we play. and quite frankly what the fuck business is it of anyones what my band or any other makes. when you're in position where you are making a lot of money for a club should you let them exploit you because you want every one to think you are "staying hungry". nonsense.
number two: your slanderous attempt to attack my "punk rock cred" is all for not...my band never willing released anything on any coke sponsored cd. we where asked indirectly by the label we where on at the time if they could place two songs off our latest release on the compilation. we where not made aware of any affiliation with coke until after the cds where pressed. this set off a chain effect of a lot of arguments which later led to the demise of our relationship with that label (case in point we are on KRS now), us pulling out of the shows and a long apology and explanation on our website of how we could not be involved with something such as that. i know details cut down the sensationalism but the truth is so much more interesting. so don't question my devotion to my music, you have no more an idea what i go through than i do about you...to assume you have such insight or vision is silly.
lastly, i never said i wasn't associated with any scene i just said i pledge no allegiance to such. there are bands and people i love from around here and would glady do anything for but it ends there. at some point you have to cut the apron strings and stake a claim outside if you feel what you do has merit, and thats how the idea of a "music scene" is created.
its probably easier for you to think it must be because you're from plano i used to feel the same way because i was from mesquite (an ever shitter suburb). i used to wonder why my bands never got any response from other bands, then i realised i was walking into situations with a "you owe me" attitude. obviously they didn't owe me anything.
i'm sorry you're so unhappy with dallas, music is obviously where you draw your pulse and this place is not good for that. i hope you can make it work for you. my solution has been spending a good deal of time away from it.
oh yeah deerhoof is not crap.

27Great on record.
CRAP live.
I've never been so bored with a band.
The t-shirt I bought should be sent back with a demand for my money back.
Love those records though.
Overall they get a NOT CRAP WF: 9
Man were they bad live.

28What a peculiar thread!
Tuppence worth: I saw both Deerhoof and Black Dice at ATP earlier this year. I thought they were both crap.
Deerhoof has a waffle. For the first ten minutes of their show I thought, "this may be the best band with two guitars I have seen in a long, long time." I was excited. Soon I became very bored and irritated and by the end of the performance actually hated them (as a band, folks, not as humans).
Black Dice (I am unsure as to why they are involved in this thread, but what the hey) were a load of bollocks. Just total bollocks.
Shit man, they were so bad I can't even remember which ATP they were at...I think it was this one. Could have been last year. Crumbs.

29Great band, but the singer drives the shit out of me.
Not Crap with a big waffle for her ruining all those stellar arrangements with her mediocre vocals.

I like it when clever clever arrangements get fucked with a bit. Otherwise things become...owyousay....fusion? Bands with one small fault is always good. All bands should have one little fault, like all good heroes and villains must have a fatal weakness.
