i bet primus was way better.

wait!! primus, is better than helmet, right?

wikipedia has some funny things to say about helmet.

wikipedia wrote:Helmet was acclaimed as a "Thinking person's heavy metal band."

funny, cuz i can think of about 100 bands that fit the bill for "a thinking person's heavy metal band" more so than helmet.

wikipedia wrote:Eschewing the traditional heavy metal image of long hair and black clothing, the band stood out with their preference for simple t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers, along with short haircuts.

oh, never mind, i guess it's a fashion thing.

Helmet were kinda like gods to me in high school. At least, Strap It On, Meantime and Betty were. Covered a few of their songs in the band--it was totally like "John Stanier is awesome! Dude, Page Hamilton rocks!"

It's so sad to see a band you once liked go the way of suck, but it happens. By the time Aftertaste came out, the formula was wearing pretty thin. Still a few good songs on it, but they shoulda just called it a day.

This new incarnation with Page Hamilton and three new guys seems like a real embarrassment.

He should just form a new band and call it Donkey Cock or something like that.

Never lilked this band, but am obsessed with two of their songs. It is very embarassing, telling people you don't like Helmet (and I really don't like 95% of their music) and then listening to the same 2 songs for days.

That's why I have to give them Not Crap. Because 'Blacktop' is one of my favorite songs ever.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I hate pearl jam, from the moment I heard them up until the media hype about eddie vedder hangliding and writing lyrics, I loathed them.

BUt I freely admit I love that shitty song they have ... something about the old lady behind the counter or something. I do shower singing to that song a lot.

This may seem odd in the context of the many, many different ways that people became aware of Helmet - MTV, Beavis and Butthead, Primus tours. But there was a time in about 1991 when you could not get a copy of Strap It On ANYWHERE because it was sold out. I had just started going to college in New York City about this time and kept hearing about how great they were - but I couldn't get this record.

So one day I pick up the Voice and see that they're playing at CBGBs. Great. I convince a friend to go with me, but he got drunk earlier in the day and I had to go by myself. Can't remember who opened for them, but when they took the stage: holy fucking hell. They had an instantly definable sound and were so, so powerful live. And I mean to tell you that the whole club from my vantage point (about 3 people away from the stage) instantly went totally bonkers. Everyone was just going CRAZY as they played - it felt like the walls were jumbling around with every other molecule in the place. They were so insanely on that every single beating heart in that place was floored.

In this time, when they were at their peak, they were ruling the world . About 4 or 5 months later they rolled through town on the Ugly American Overkill tour and amazingly topped both Tar and the Cows for mindblowingly great performances. Crazy as it may seem, by the time they took the stage - everyone in the room knew it was going to be the best show they'd see for a while, maybe until the Jesus Lizard rolled back through. And then they ripped into it and the room just exploded.

There's some lesson to be learned from how they turned from a perfectly wound machine of fury into something so bland. I can't pin it down. But, unbelievable as it may seem to those who listen to the lazy drawl of that Interscope stuff, everyone was totally excited about this band for a while and they absolutely deserved it.

Not Crap.
