i got to thinking about this the other day because i may be getting myself a VPI scout in the not so distant future, so i wondered what i would bring to the shop. i would also bring my own turntable (pro-ject 1/grado silver) for comparison.

1. helmet - "in the meantime"
2. talk talk - "spirit of eden" or "i believe in you"
3. nightmares on wax - "pipes honour"
4. PIL - "memories"
5. jesus lizard - "gladiator"
6. nick drake - five leaves left probably


nice call on the dots & loops and chavez, too.

I have a CD of tones and noise That I made with all levels at -6dB (in theory)
I have found that the last few Stereo Lab records have just about everything you need to hear from a spectral standpoint. I also like to use CDs I have burned of Martin Denny Lps to see how peaky the mid-range is.
For sure volume I like da metal. Electric Wizard, 100 Years War, High on Fire...

That or I'll just throw up a mic and give it gain until it is just on the cusp of barfing and listen for what is resonant.

that's not a fair fight. you will buy a VPI, unless the shop is run by a bunch of idiots.

it's not a fight, just a trial. i want to hear how much better it is on the shop's reference system. i will buy it, yes.

it's not a fight, just a trial. i want to hear how much better it is on the shop's reference system. i will buy it, yes.

what you should do is ask to bring the VPI home overnight or over a weekend. listen to it in YOUR system.

if you listen to it on the shop's system, in their room, it is going to sound so different, but you won't know exactly what is causing the improvments.

when I worked as a Hifi salesman, we often sent people home with components for them to try out. If they looked trustworthy, and left a deposit.....

Sometimes I even helped them set the shit up.
