When I say long term, I mean for life. I don't believe in the death penalty because I don't believe it is an effectively torturous enough punishment, nor an effective deterrent. Not subscribing to the wholly ridiculous notion of an afterlife nor retribution therein, I can't see how dying (even horribly) is a greater punishment than locking someone up for life in squalid conditions with a bunch of other hostile lunatics. Unlike some civil libertarians, I do not believe convicted felons have any right to any quality of life. Bread, water, air, bars. I would much rather business exploit cheap domestic convict labour than international sweatshops; it's both PC and patriotic.

I disagree that sexual abuse is an epidemic. US Bureau of Justice figures from 1990-2002 show a steady in decline in the rate of sexual assaults on those both over 12 and under 12. Similarly, figures in Canada and Australia show downward trends.

And if it were epidemic, as you suggested, you'd be in for a lot of killing. Have you got the stomach for it? I, personally, do not. You can't kill away problems.

I like blowing a gasket about shit I care about.
"Sinkelhou, also a sociology professor at the University of New Hampshire, said he agrees that about 70 to 80 percent of sexual abuse in children goes unreported"
"The cases which actually get reported and go to trial are a very, very tiny number when compared to what is actually happening"
So, throw around all the declining numbers bullshit all you want. Look at those numbers and quadrupel them and tell me there's no epidemic.

I have read that the presumption many people make that a raped person equals a ruined life can be extremely damaging.... people who have been abused are extremely resilient.... i saw a study showing that their "success in life" is, by age X, on average equal to that of anyone else, abused or no. it is the common mantra of "your life is now ruined" that can inflict the greatest psychological damage.

as for how to deal with sex offenders, i've heard that denmark has a system where a sex offender can be released from prison if he agrees to be chemically castrated. reoffense rate after castration is zero. sounds like a good system to me.

I hear what you are saying but I must speak from experience. I can't tell you how many girls I've known closely as friends or dated who are still all fucked up 15, 20 years later after some uncle diddled them or some teacher showed them their cock....the girls I know who have been straight up raped, even grey area 'date' raped never get over it, it's always there....sure you can move on and live a 'normal' life, but that dosen't mean it's not inside fucking with you. When I say 'ruined life' I don't mean ending up homeless or a suicide case, though I just read a study that linked drug addiction later in life to being molested...the numbers on this study were huge....something like 75 percent of the females in jail for drug offenses were sexually abused at some point.
There's all kinds of shit being sexually abused will do to a person, make them act out in weird ways, cut themselves, do drugs, fuck random people. It's a horrid thing to do to someone, especially a little kid who has no defense against it.
Doing that to someone, making them carry fucked up baggage around forever because you refuse to control yourself like everyone else has to is on par with killing someone, if you ask me.
The fact the sentences for drug offenders are way harsher on average than the ones for child molesters and rapists makes me wonder just what the fuck is wrong with this country.
You say the death penalty isn't a deterrant....if they came on TV today and said anyone caught molesting a kid or raping someone will be killed, you really don't think the numbers would go down? I do.

ah, i remember now what the thing i read said... it was that the youngest children are the most resilient -- the under 13s, whose rape is the most outrageous to the general public. it's much more damaging to more mature individuals or something. i should stop vaguely alluding to things i read a lot long time ago.

the statistic about women in jail for drug offenses does not surprise me. but there isn't necessarily a causal relationship between sexual abuse and "a life of crime." i would guess it's more related to the context. if you're in a home where your father molests you, you're going to leave home too early and end up in an unstable situation somewhere, where you're again vulnerable to molestation. and bad homes aren't conducive to morality anyway (not that illegal drugs are immoral, but you know what i mean)

It is my understanding that alot of these predators are not treatable- they are just wired that way. If you want help, I'm all for it, but most of these guys I'm sure don't. For me, it is not about "punishment". It's all about just disposing of them. You either learn to control yourself- don't fucking rape women or molest little children, or your are delt with. I don't think we should be locking these habitual predators up. The world worse off to allow them to breathe the same air as you or I. Just my opinion.

Marsupialized- US Bureau of Justice figures are adjusted to take ionto account rapes not self-reported and those not reported to any agency. It is not epidemic! An epidemic is a condition which is defined as being widely prevalent, or rapidly increasing. Figures for the US, Canada, the UK and Australia all report declining rates of sexual assault. It is simply not epidemic if rates are being reduced. Police agencies in both the US and Canada said the rate of reportage had increased as well. It is a declining phenomenon, and with determination and vigilance, it may approach zero.

I also know victims of sexual assault, during childhood and otherwise. Most of them are not "fucked up" in any detectable way.

I see no need for such a rage-fuelled and reactionary response. Oh, wait a second...you're from the US...your people are known for shooting first and asking questions later, ignoring or avoiding facts, being completely reactionary, prone to outbursts and fits of violence, controlled by emotion not reason, poorly educated, and suffocated by a media that tells you the world is ending and makes you scared of life itself. I shouldn't have been surprised.

That is a pretty infintile response...it might be more constructive to let us know how you think one "repays the debt" of raping a fucking child. I can't for the life of me think of one.
