Miles' musics are about beauty.
Coltrane's musics are about wisdom.
Wisdom.
Either-Or: John Coltrane OR Miles Davis.

He also threw punches at Coltrane. I think Coltrane left Miles' band directly after this incident.
Miles knew that Coltrane was a pacifist and wouldn't fight back.

I recall reading that Monk witnessed this, and said, "You're John Coltrane! You don't have to take that shit!" And promptly invited him to join his band, then doing a regular gig at the Five Spot. Dunno how true that story is, though. (Porter may not mention this.)

At any rate, the end result is Live at the Five Spot, which is fantastic.

His worst records were worse than Coltranes, but his best records were better.
True. I go with Miles anyday, even though I'm a big fan of both.

29easy: Coltrane...i mean, i love Miles, but Coltrane's one of my absolute favorites...my favorite jazz musician...not much can compete...oh, and with Coltrane comes (at the peak at least) Elvin Jones! i mean how can fuck with that?

30Coltrane. I think Miles covered more territory if you like but Trane seemed to be singlemindedly striving for the freedom finally realised on Interstellar Space. Trane's 1965 records are one of my favorite chunks of musical output by anyone. I'm particularly fond of Sun Ship and First Meditations.
Lately, I've ben really enjoying Miles Davis electric period and particularly Live at the Filmore East (March 7 1970) It's About That Time. This is a ferocious record and I literally hold my breath through parts of it. The Complete Cellar Door Sessions are good too.
I voted for Trane but it's a pretty close thing.
