Don't feel too bad about struggling with floor toms, I do too. I even watch instructional videos on YT and think those floor toms sound bad half the time. I really can't stand the 'boooow' pitchy effect, which is theoretically supposed to go away if the bottom head is tuned tighter than the top. But I often still hear it, and often add a little tape to the bottom head to minimize it without over deadening.

I'm converting an 8ftx12ft room in my garage into a control room and this will be used with Room EQ Wizard to do measurements and hopefully acoustic treatment once the walls are back up. Currently working on new electrical and isolation via GenieClips + furring channel, insulation, and adding mass to an exterior wall.
Haven't used this mic to take any real measurements yet, but my aspiring control room is back together...as a room that is, mostly. The isolation (as described previously) turned out better than I'd hoped, and it's not even 100% yet.. I still need a better door situation and to put up the inner pane of my window.

Now things stall through the holidays. if I'm lucky it'll have flooring done in a week or two. If not, January. Then I can start working on the acoustic treatment, which will be another whole ordeal.

Just got a Harmony Rocket, I had one about 20 years ago (I got it in trade after I found a Klavinet in a garbage pile) and have regretted selling it for the last 10 years. This one has tuners and bridge replaced.

I love getting a vintage piece of gear with logical functional replacements that both keep it affordable and make it easier / better to play.

Speaking of Harmony...

Half an hour ago I picked up an early 60s Harmony lap steel, DeArmond pickup. $80 from a dude on Craigslist. It's the version with the chrome ashtray instead of the big black Harmony branded one. Just like this;

It also has an AP&M Co. brass slide nut fitted over the plastic one. It's a beauty. Just a little of the copper paint flaking off at the butt end. Can't wait to hear how it sounds!

Damn the strings on this thing are monstrous! I'm at work, so I just happen to have a caliper sitting here. String gauges are 14, 17, 27, 37, 57, 57. These things are ancient, but I like the feel. Looks like the Ernie Ball "not even slinky" set would be pretty damn close.

That always drove me kind of nuts as well. I started getting much better results putting a coated single-ply on the resonant side, then following my normal tuning protocol (resonant head tuned consonant to batter, or up a third, depending on what worked better for the situation).

On it's way to me: one of those Fender Squier Telecaster Custom IIs with P-90s. Pretty stoked.
