On the surface, it seems like the kind of boneheaded show that I would never even consider watching, but I'm totally sucked in by it's matter-of-fact preposterous scenarios, near-cliches, and approaching surreal humor. It's all just slightly off in the best way.
The Jack Reacher novels are the filthiest of my guilty pleasures, so I was thinking I might get a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime and check it out.

The thing I was wondering: does the show take place a couple of decades ago, or is it in the present day? Because if I remember correctly, the bad guys' scheme centers around something that would work in the present day (there's no spoiler tag option on this site, otherwise I'd explain what I mean by that).

(I meant to write "does not work in the present day")

Huh. Okay, I guess I'll see how they fixed that in the series.

If you haven’t seen the original, I highly, highly recommend it. The novel is good too.
Yeah, it seems a good idea to see the different takes on the story. Del Toro gives a good interview, I heard him saying how much he loved the book and how the original movie was such a good setup, but they missed some opportunity- I can't recall exactly what. He seems brighter than most stylized, gore and monster directors in that he always uses the grotesque and surreal towards some psychological, or mythological end. Maybe more like Cronenberg in that way. A cool mix of high and low brow.

Julia Garner would be up for a Nicole Kidman Award For Most Embarassing Attempt to “Do” an Accent, if there was such a thing, and if Nicole Kidman herself wasn’t out there making a dogs breakfast of playing Lucille Ball.
I haven't watched this or met Anna Delvey, but a fake "vaguely European" accent is actually consistent with the article this series is based on.

Sure. But watch an interview with Anna Sorokin and then the intro monologue. Julia Garner might think she’s doing Russian and German, but it’s coming across Israeli and Norwegian, with a lobotomy.
