Weekly update- Bolt-on neck:

Also got a lot done on this one. Headstock relief finalized, shaped and rough-sanded neck profile, fretboard slotted and cut to length. Goal is to get the fretboard on by next sunday.

Also- this is my fretboard making setup. Pretty simple, but effective. digital caliper to measure to the 1000th of an inch (as if anyone has a chance of being that accurate). stick the x-acto knife in that spot, butt the cabinet makers square against it, then use the little razor saw to make the slot. Put on the Lung record and pull up the stewmac fret calculator...about an hour to do both boards. Next step is dots and 12" radius.

Weekly Update- Bass: I got the final shape of the neck completed, finished the pickup cutout, the routing of the back of the body. I did this chamfer on the headstock- kinda like it. whole unit is down to 3lbs 9oz. kinda surprised.

Weekly Update: bolt-on. Got this pretty close to ready for the board- thinking about a chamfer on this too.

Got both boards slotted and dotted. I think I've learned that I dislike making fretboards from scratch...given the relative cost vs a pre slotted and radiused board, it just isn't worth the time.

This is great given how many contraptions I've seen go through stew mac for fret cutting. I have wiggly hands so a depth stop is mandatory, if you don't have one right on!

Weely Update: Bolt On- Sorry for being a day late, I had to pick my wife up from the airport yesterday. Anyhow, the bolt on is getting very close to finished. Board is on, radiused, and took the aluminum up to #800. I don't want to go further, because doing the fretwork will inevitably introduce a few scuffs that'll need to be sanded out anyway.

Weekly update: Bass. This thing is a lot more work, for many reasons, than the typical guitar. but will keep plugging away. Got a lot of of it cleaned up, and sanded to #320. added a 1/8" spacer under the fretboard. in the next week hope to get the fretboard on and finish up the body so I can start sanding that.
