Ultimate Thunderdome: Fugazi vs. The Jesus Lizard

214
I was just in jr. high, and getting into punk for the first time, Dead Kennedys, Snuff, and Lagwagon became my favorite bands, most of the new music I was hearing was through snowboarding videos. I bought red medicine out of recommendation, but didn't like more than a few songs, so I exchanged it. I remember digging bed for scraping quite a bit... I never got into the whole punk thing. frankly, I thought they all looked like fools, and couldn't skateboard properly because they were wearing too much shit, they just looked uncomfortable all the time, and most were kinda fucks. I rember being at a local show, and some "punks" were giving me shit because I had on a Queers shirt, and they started asking me questions about the band in a deliberate tone as if I was just wearing the shirt because it was "cool."

It wasn't until a few years ago I got an appreciation for Fugazi. I repurchased, Red Medicine, and The Argument. With the Jesus Lizard, it hit me quickly, yow's vocals were different, hard to stomache at first, "the art of self defense" was the first song I heard. I was quickly drawn in, and was kinda blown away at the musicianship. I first heard the Jesus Lizard out recommendation as well.

Both are relevant to me, and both have influenced me one way or another. You could argue the Jesus Lizard, because it struck me, and Fugazi grew on me, but maybe I wasn't at the age to appreciate it? I was only 14 when I bought it, and into, for the most part, straight forward punk music.

Tough; but I'm going with The Jesus Lizard. It hit me quickly, and got underneath my skin quicker than Fugazi, even the second time around.

well, seems to me they ran out of ideas, reworked some old songs into new songs, and then used this drummer as a creative catalyst which didn't really work out all that well.

having two drummers on more than half the songs should have made them more interesting rhythmically but instead it barely masked the issue that they were creatively dry. jerry busher could not save the fact that they were tired of it.

i recall reading various interviews around the time of "end hits" that every album cover and title had a hidden meaning.

"end hits." what could that mean? the skyline of (i think) tokyo? dunno.
"the argument." what argument? the hand holding a torch and the empty hand? hm...real stumper that one.

i don't think they planned to do one more album after "end hits." when i saw them the first time they opened with "song #5" and closed with "the argument."

i think they just wound up writing a couple songs with jerry and figuring what the hell, might as well do one more album since we got the songs for it. if they had done an EP instead it'd be pretty killer with the right tracks from the "furniture" single and "the argument." instead, we get an ok single with what may be the very first/worst fugazi song written, and an album that is really just not up to anything previous. it's just weak. i feel for you if these songs excite you. with an exception or two between the single and album most of these have me reaching for the skip button.

the awesome EP would have been:
song #5
new morning
full disclosure
epic problem
nightshop
the argument

fuck all the rest of it. (i was on the fence about "ex spectator" and figured if i'm on the fence then fuck it.)

My favorite Fugazi record. I think it is their most consistent album from song to song.

indeed it is. it is more consistently boring.

"in on the kill taker" is consistently exciting. "red medicine" is consistently off kilter. and "end hits" was consistently retreading (in a good way.)
