Julie - My Anti-Aircraft Friend
Hear me out: the 2020s version of early Interpol
* fashion conscious
* art ambitions (“design-collective”)
* urban coastal art scene
* adept band with their own identity still mining a newly nostalgic sound - replace Sonic Youth/MBV with Joy Division, Deftones with Echo & the Bunnymen - there is a generic component that is important to this
* production just this side of alternative radio - early 2000s thing was every band claiming to sound like a mix of SY/MBV and never quite delivering - julie the same, but aside from the shoegaze boy girl stuff you get heavy indebtedness to 2-3 decade old modern rock radio
* and they are beautiful of course
If this sounds like a complaint, I like them. I meant to see them in Houston but couldn’t swing it. Them there was an unrelated shooting outside or something, can’t remember if it was canceled but not sad I didn’t go.
I’m just now kind of seeing how older dudes were responding to Interpol when they first came out. I was way into their first lp in the early 2000s and didn’t quite understand the BUT JOY DIVISION response aside from the vocal similarity, but 20 years and a million records later, I see what (the dudes) were saying! Yes it’s definitely been done before.
There are a couple bands I listen to that I probably think about more than I actually listen to them and julie is one. I probably should have started a thread to post this but don’t want to encourage a bitter dog pile - not what this is about.
