[The following took place in the kitchen]
Me: What would you do if you were on a plane, and there were snakes on it?
Dad: (with puzzled look on face) Wha?
Me: You were on a plane, and there were snakes on the plane with you. You know, let loose on the plane I mean.
Dad: Snakes?
Me: Yeah, snakes loose on the plane. What would you do?
Dad: Depends what kind of snakes they were.
Me: Poisonous ones.
Dad: Batter them. Get hold of them and batter them.
My dad had nothing else to say on the matter, and I felt unable to continue the conversation.
[The following took place in the kitchen]

[The following took place at a supermarket checkout]
Me: So, what would you do if there were snakes loose on your plane?
Girlfriend: (pause) Stay calm.
Me: Okay, but what steps would you take to actually deal with them?
GF: (long pause) I'd try and poke them with something.
Me: Like what?
GF: Um...(very long pause)...somebody's walking stick, or something.
Me: Well, what if there were loads of them?
GF: I dunno. I think the main thing would be to stay calm.
Me: Would you feel better if someone like Sam Jackson was on the plane with you?
GF: (very long pause) Maybe.
At this point it was our turn at the till, and so ended the conversation.
