One time I tuned in to NPR and heard him, Steve Martin (Yes, the comedian) and another performer (whose name I've forgotten) totally shred banjos together. It was probably one of the most honest musical moments I've ever listened, considering that before they started playing, they all talked about why is it that they love an instrument that has so many negative connotations attached to it, in addition to being dorks about listening to banjo records in their younger days.

My first concert on the other hand, is far less respectful. NIN and A Perfect Circle, in Cleveland, at the CSU center.

I really can't answer this correctly as I am sure my first show was just a local punk rock band (probally VISCULAR BASALT) but my first "big shows" were.

Flipper, the Dwarves and Ed Hall

New Bomb Turks and Mustard Plug

Jesus Lizzard, Killdozer and Shorty

I remember them all being right around when I first got my drivers license so that would put them around 92ish. I would pay $1000 to have my mind totally blown as my 16 year old mind must have been watching Flipper.

First concert: 1985- Pat Metheny at Poplar Creek (had a bunch of friends that were into "jazz" at the time).

First real show: June 1987- Soul Asylum/Downy Mildew/Precious Wax Drippings at Cabaret Metro (We had gone to see The Jazz Butcher, who was supposed to play on that bill, but someone in that band apparently broke their arm or something and they had to cancel some tour dates, so Downy Mildew was their replacement).

Failure/Flaming Lips/Tool at the Riv in May 1994. I was 16. It was a fun show, and it got me into the Flaming Lips.

I should probably rephrase that last part.

My roommate LOVES this band. He played me one of their 7"s, pretty cool stuff.

Giants Chair @ Concert Cafe ~1996 in Green Bay, WI. Scott Hobart wore leather pants. I honestly can't remember the opening bands at that show. Castor, perhaps? Sarge? Hmm...

I know that I likely attended fairground or bar shows that my parents dragged me to, but that was the first show that I had gone to by choice.
