Fuck mid life.
That’s crap

But will you be in South Korea between December 10-16? If so let’s grab a beer
Odds generally would have been favorable but in this case I’ll miss you by one week and by one country. I’ll be in Japan between Dec. 16-21. So close, damn!

My lady has a bidness meeting in New Orleans this weekend, and I’m tagging along. Sitting in the airport, looking forward to stuffing my face with po boys and beignets. Staying in the Garden District tonight. Accepting restaurant recommendations.

Edit/Update: Surrey (on Magazine St)- Had lunch at this little dive. Veggie po’boy with goat cheese, gumbo, and potato salad. Excellent po’boy. French bread is held to a high standard in this city. Crunchy, flaky, light. French bread in TX is always so rubbery and doughy. Excellent roasty gumbo. Tater salad was mayo, paprika, and other delicious whatnot. Recommended, but expect at least a half hour wait for lunch.

Coquette (on Magazine and Washington)- Had smothered flounder with a stewed okra and smoked trout roe. Gulf oysters for an appetizer. Delicious, but the service wasn’t so hot. Took an hour to get our meal, and our waiter rarely made appearances. He was big and easy.

Have often repped for it here but Cochon is my favorite restaurant in the US

My partner lived and worked in Japan after graduate school 30 years ago, and she has introduced me to a lot of interesting things from Japanese culture, including sumo, which we have been watching together for a couple of years. Our favorite rikishi is Kotozakura, who had been promoted to the second-highest ranking in the sport since we've been paying attention, and today he won his first top level championship, fighting against an intimidating Mongolian wrestler with an identical tournament record that we also like. We tried to stay up last night to watch live on a Twitch stream that we follow, but ended up just holding out for the highlights package this morning. Sumo in general is pretty damn cool, but I read a book about the dark side of the sport and culture surrounding it that has tempered my enthusiasm just a bit.

Cochon was on the short list. I’ll hit it next time.

I had lunch at Turkey & the Wolf today. Had a collard melt- slow cooked collards, swiss cheese, pickled cherry pepper dressing, and cole slaw on toasted rye. Side dish was a cabbage salad- roasted chili and coconut vinaigrette, lime and herbs, sunflower seeds, fried garlic, and pig ear cracklin. BOLD FLAVORS.

About to fly back home. I didn’t eat a single beignet. I guess I could pick some up at the airport Cafe Du Monde.

New Orleans is a special place. Weather was perfect. First time I’ve been here when it wasn’t raining or the humidity wasn’t like swimming through the air.
