As thanks he bought a crate of beer and brought it back to our spot in the campsite. He sat with us and drank some beers with everyone, we played some football (soccer) and did the usual sort of stuff, none of us knew this fat chap and he was a little annoying. He eneded up staying until 7am, he drank lots of our beer, ate lots of our food and took some peoples drugs, when he left he stole one of our backpacks and a chair. Naturally I ran after him and confronted him which ended with me returning with our stuff thankfully. Earlier on in our evening, before his foulness had been fully realised I tried to talk with him, obviously we talked about music because I'm boring and have nothing to say. He told me about his band; they were incredible apparently- etc. I could go on.

Anyway, my band played one of my local clubs a few years back, and guess who was the lead singer in the band we were supporting? Fat man obviously. They opened with an acoustic cover of Song 2 by Blur, played some Manson and Radiohead songs and sounded like a slab of shit, the drummer wouldn't let us use any of his kit after he'd told us we could so we had to ram one together from the clubs basment rubbish and the bassist got pissy with us when we didn't join in on his racist ribbing of the token black man in the club that night. Personal confrontation between bands, awful memories of fat mess and trying to avoid him/pretend I didn't hate/recognise him and racism all in one night.

Excellent story, Sphincter. But I have 2 questions.

Didn't the guy who drank your beer and ate your food first BUY YOU A CRATE OF BEER? Or was that just considered payment for being snuck in?

How's come you went to a gig with a drummer but no drum kit? Was it arranged before you went to the venue that you'd have a drum kit provided? People coming to a gig expecting to borrow gear, then giving me "you're a douchebag if you don't let me use your shit" vibe, that always pissed me off, I have to say.

But that portly schmuck with his backpack stealing ways, whatta freak.

Well he shared his crate with us, he had a good 6 or 7, then when it was finished he started up one of ours, by the morning a large dent had been made in our supply. I wouldn't hold that against anyone really, unless the person was being a general cock-end towards me. Nah, breakables were brought, but we had been told we would be allowed to use the kit on the stage.

Now I don't wanna shit all over this band too bad because we had zero dealings with them at all, and it's not a big deal but here's a move they pulled that I'll throw out there for discussion:

We play first, there's maybe 7 people hanging out in the music area when we start, the other bands are in the separate bar area where you can't hear the music at all, hanging with their friends they brought.
The headlining band comes in with their friends and watch after a few minutes and clap and hoot and holler and whatnot, nice guys.
The middle band who wouldn't even say hello to us earlier can't be bothered to come in even for a few minutes, they just stay in the bar area with their friends till we are done. So we have to play to like 10 people while they keep their 20 friends out in the other room yucking it up.
They pulled the same shit with the awesome headlining band, didn't even come in for a second. I think they actually loaded their shit up and left rigth after they played.
I mean, at least come in for a second or two and see what's up....right? How did they know they wouldn't like our shit? They are just not interested in bands or music? I don't get it. They really missed a great band with the headliners, they were on fire. We were pretty good too, I gotta say.
Eh, whatever I had fun.
BTW the sound at Ronny's is amazing, a million times better than pretty much anywhere else we've played in this city so far.

Holy shit, I'm glad we've never played with any bands as fucked up as the bands you folks are describing.

Wait...I take that back. 10,000 Maniacs opened for us in Madison.

The low point of the show was watching the singer follow a cricket around on stage in a display of isn't nature wonderful? astonishment. Yuck.

I played with a band called Simplicity this summer and they were BAD. There name was Simplicity for Christ's sake. But, then the singer came up to me after their set and was the nicest fucking guy...felt kinda bad after that.

Eh, maybe not.

Holy Shit! Just saw that they're playing the Elbo Room on Nov. 30th! Circle of life.

I

I've bitched about this exact same thing here and was told that if I were in a hard-touring band and understood what it's like to be exhausted and facing yet another tough gig, I'd have more empathy for people who can't muster the energy to stand for 3 songs of the supporting act's set so they'll be playing to 15 people instead of 11.

I didn't buy it then and I don't buy it now. Unless the other bands are assholes or just insufferably bad, you support the other acts on the bill in a small venue in hopes the favor will be returned and because it's the right thing to do.

Every band I've known personally and respected has made sure they do this.

I feel I should share this with you. It's not a public moment of douchebaggery but it's still pretty dickish nonetheless.

This is Keitel. They are defunct. We played a show with them and the excellent Vancouver duo Bel Riose a while back. The show wound up being a little lengthy because my drummer's other band was going on hiatus for a year as of the following Monday and as a favour to me the venue added their band to the bill first. The resulting lineup was Eroark, us, Keitel and Bel Riose. The drummer's band is this. They basically sound(ed) like a different band every show for some reason. This time they were fairly mellow.

So we finish our set, and Keitel comes up to us to tell us we put on a decent set. Within earshot of the drummer, their drummer says, "Thanks for actually warming up the crowd for us. If we'd gone on after Eroark everyone would still be sleeping."

Not huge rudeness, just a dick move.

OH! And I saw Torquil Campbell's band Memphis open for Apostle Of Hustle. Fuck that was garbage. Bastard had a saxophonist with him who clearly idolised Kenny G. At one point he apparently told a ghost story that everyone in the audience thought was stupid.

Later, Torquil invited a couple of women at the show to wherever the band was staying. They went, and when they left one of them took his book of lyrics because he was being a pretentious dick all night. He called the cops on them. When they eventually got caught and gave Torquil the book back, he told one of them, "Just because you're beautiful doesn't give you the right to be a bitch."

Took two full hours to soundcheck, at a fucking basement show with maybe 30 people in attendance....couldn't be bothered to so much as say hello to anyone else the entire night, never said thank you for letting them use my speakers as monitors, tried to sell several different glossy posters of himself in different poses with his acoustic guitar, had an acoustic mini set in the middle of his regular set, fucking sucked ass, bitched about his take at the end of the night even though he emptied the place with his crap.....man, what a douchebag.
