Last thing I'll say, since the word was thrown out earlier...I absolutely loathe the word 'cunt'
It makes my skin crawl.
Even still, I don't self righteously jump all over someone when they use it.

You should not ever use that word, it's disgusting and disrespectful to women!

For one, I am not a woman and it's not my place to speak for women. I am not so arrogant and do not think so lowly of women that I feel they need big ol' male me to protect them from the evil word 'cunt'.
Secondly, telling people what they can and can't say...it's something a fucking asshole does.

It's okay, this thread isn't worth it. The whole board seems like a bunch of 15 year olds right now...

I swore to myself that i wouldn't post on this thread. I broke my promise to myself by making a riot-grrl joke after someone pointed out that the word "cunt" is offensive. For some reason this amused me, is all. Heh.

And now i have posted twice on this awful thread! Awful!

It was me that brought up the word "cunt". I don't think there's any real question it can be offensive. I didn't mean it offended me, I was just trying to say that sometimes we have to think about the words we use, and the context we use them in, so we don't say, or imply, something we don't really want to say or imply.

That is all I meant.

No. You might want to stop posting ridiculous shit soon.

Is this shit necessary, really?

Skronk, you're a hell of a guy but that first sentence is stunningly naiive. You think that just because you're at a cool board with lots of people who like Shellac and other good music, that none of these anonymous entities could possibly be racists? Puh-leeeeze. How much do you really know about anyone here? Their lives maybe, if they are the type to air their personal stuffs here. But you can't learn much about anyone's soul from letters on a computer. You can guess, but you'll never know until you see their actions and feel their presence.

You're right that a forum is a poor substitute for sitting down one on one and talking, but from what I can tell, from forum posts alone, none of the members of the forum are racist. We already have our impressions, and an outline of the personalities of posters here, that just happens. If that's what I have to go on, simply because I haven't met these posters, then it's not a naive assertion. I could be proven wrong, but I doubt the majority here are vastly different than how they interact online.

Lonesome Bulldog wrote:As far as the "ridiculous shit" comment being "necessary", well yeah why not? I don't hate on Amanda but she's not helping her image by making blanket statements about other races. You should suppress the "hero instinct", forget she's a popular and attractive female and jut recognize the foolishness for what it is.

Even if I don't agree with someone's opinions, I don't feel like adding hostility to thread, and telling them to shut up. It's pointless. I can get my point across without talking down to them. There's no hero instinct going on, I'm just annoyed at the way situation's turned out. I'd say something no matter who it is, if I think they don't deserve it.

Could someone do the stats on what people are saying here? Because there are some who are defending casual racial remarks, and some who are castigating the remarker, but I'd bet there is a big hump in the middle with all the people who have respectfully stated their distaste of the comment. Because it's the comment, the sentiment that is being judged here, not the person. At least by most of us.

I'd like to see a list of the people who have told anyone to "shut up" or told anyone what they can or can't say. I bet it's short (short like Horuss' woman-beating penis LOL).
this thing, she is the awesome

Well, big part of the discussion was/were what was really the sentiment behind the remark.

Now, dear PRFer, listen to Nina Nastasia and do something productive instead of posting in this thread.

Agreed with Skronk that I don't think that any of the members on the forum are racist. Furthermore, I don't think any of them are sexist, homophobic or really discriminatory in any way.

Been posting here for a while and just haven't seen it.

However, I do think it's legitimate to call someone out for having said something dumb. I don't think it's all that legitimate to start a new thread solely devoted to shaming someone for having made one remark while in the foggy stupor of having been rudely awoken. The way that Horuss did it made it seem more like a personal attack than a helpful call-out.

Saying "Mexican piece of shit" will inevitably convey the connotation that the person is (or is at least partly) a piece of shit specifically because he or she is a Mexican. There's just no two ways around that. Mandroid said that she had been rudely awoken and had been frustrated and bothered by these people for weeks and weeks, though, so take that into account as well. The end result is that it shouldn't have been said, but her having said it does not by itself make her a racist.

I would like to think of myself as non-racist, but I do say and do stupid shit pretty consistently.

So: I don't think Mandroid's a racist. She should have been called out. Just not in this way. Started a good thread at least.

Do you guys honestly think that Mandrizz, being a Polack herself would not have said 'Polish pieces of shit' if they were Polacks?

I am quite certain she would have. If it was a bunch of billy goats out there making noise I bet a hundred dollars she would have said 'you billy goat pieces of shit'

Someone thinks that if she looked out and it was a bunch of white dudes she would have just given some sort of secret white person nod to them or something?

Good job guys, hopefully you'll wake up some fucking Mexicans with that racket!
