I'm mostly appalled at how blunt and unpoetic the lyrics are.
It's like "let's put brainstormed placeholder words in for what we want the song to be about, and we'll write actual lyrics later...".

I don't think so either. I'm mostly mystified by how nondescript it is. It has no connection to their earlier sound, but it doesn't sound like anything to come out of their own inspiration either (since there is no inspiration there). Like, where are they taking cues from?
Although, the progression shitty radio skatepunk -> bland radio piano ballad seems totally logical.

Meh, I don't think there's anything wrong with just going all out "Everybody Hurts" once in a while.
