To make a short answer to your question, yes. It's fucking ridiculous to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars just so you can be sure what your dog's going to look like. (And that is the ONLY advantage to buying a purebreed. Statistically, a purebreed will cost you more at the vet, because they're more likely to have genetic weaknesses.)

Behavior problems can be overcome, and shelter dogs by no means necessarily come with behavioral problems. Uncertain ultimate size isn't a big deal, because the variation isn't huge. Is it a big deal that the dog you thought would be 20 pounds turns out to be 40?

Thousands of dogs euthanized every day and people pay obscene amounts of money for purebreeds just to keep as pets (as opposed to breeding for show). To put none too fine a point on it, I find it obscene.

I just want to second this post and to echo its main point: a mutt is FAR more likely to be healthy than a purebred. Furthermore, I'm not sure that breeders actually do any (extremely expensive) genetic testing. More likely that they simply try to spread the mothers and fathers around more than they did in the past, to avoid inbreeding.

We used to have a purebred, show-quality beagle. He was a sweetheart, but he died of cancer when he was only nine years old. He should have lived to be 13 to 15 years of age. Obviously, this is only an anecdote, but . . .

My wife and I volunteered at the Anti-Cruelty Society for a while, and every time we went in, there was at least one dog that would have made a perfect pet for us. We eventually took one of the dogs home, and except for some separation anxiety during the first few months (which we trained out of her), she's been absolutely perfect.

I just got mine last week. I was rtying to choose between two Twin Peaks names (Audrey and Josie), then when I went to pick her up I checked the name that was already given to her by the humane society and it was already Josie. pretty wierd. Although Josie sounds wierd, calling her JoJo is not crap.

The wierd thing with JoJo, and what made me want to get her so bad, is that her tail is snubbed and shaped like a hook or a corkscew. It's really hard to take a picture of, but there is a pic of her tail below.

I have a border collie mix. They strike me as the doggiest-looking of all dogs. Is he difficult to exercise? Mine is inexhaustible.

Wow. I'm not even a particularly big fan of cats (though I don't dislike them), and that's so cute it's making my teeth hurt.
