Steve, tell us what that wave of noise at the end of "Slave Ship" is. Is Yow shoving his mic into the bass amp like he did on the DVD? I'm thinking that's what it was, but I'm not sure.
God, I fucking love that album. Can anyone name a better rhythm section than David and Mac -- not excepting Hurley and Watt?
Ultimate Thunderdome: Fugazi vs. The Jesus Lizard
262One or two songs on the last Fugazi record sound vaguely like the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Canty uses a cow bell all the time.
"Birthday Pony" is probably the best Fugazi song.
Although Fugazi was my favourite band as a teen, I never once wished I could play like them.
I wish I were Duane Denison.
I clutch the fucking guitar and try to fucking juice out Duane Denison.
I never even saw the Jesus Lizard because I was twelve.
Jesus Lizard.

267Everyone in the Jesus Lizard was a brilliant musician, but for me it's all about the bass. David Wm. Sims is my all-time favorite. Goddamn, he played that thing like a man.
Fugazi might have meant more to me when I was younger, but I'm 100% behind the Jesus Lizard on this one. I still listen to them a lot. Fugazi, not so much.

The Jesus Lizard by a long long long long long long shot.
I completely agree with the statement above however and was talking about it with my wife just last night.
I heard Fugazi about a year before I heard the Lizard but when I heard Puss on the flipside of the Nirvana split 7" I was done. I immediately purchased Liar. I have tried and tried again to 'get' Fugazi but it just doesn't do it for me the way TJL does. I'm from and have lived in SC for most of my life so I think the more perverse and deranged imagery TJL paints with their discordant guitar work, driving rhythm section, and visceral howling of David Yow rings truer to my life experience than the politics and DIY ethos of Fugazi.
To break it out:
-The first time I heard Mouthbreather I wanted to learn to play guitar just like Duane Denison. Guy and Ian are great but I never listened to anything they did and pined for their guitarsmithing prowess.
-I saw both bands several times but Fugazi just never did it for me. The Jesus Lizard was/is the greatest live show I imagine I will ever see.
-Goat is the greatest 30 minutes of rock music that exists on recording. Fugazi does not have a record that remotely approaches this behemoth.
-Every good band I listen to now I ended up listening to as a result of hearing Puss on the flipside of the Nirvana split 7". THANK YOU TJL!
As much as I respect Fugazi's body of work, ethics, and handling of themselves there aren't words to adequately describe how great the Jesus Lizard are.

270This has been one of the most enjoyable threads of late. It really made me go back and listen to some of the records. The other day I instinctively voted for TJL but then read the thread and had second thoughts. There are compelling arguments for both bands and obviously no right or wrong answer. It's a very close thing, much closer than I initially thought, but I'll stick with TJL for Goat and Liar.
