You are probably correct in your little summation of me. Sadly, I guess is weird to state your honest feelings about something publicly and put yourself up for ridicule from people like yourself. Perhaps, that is what is is wrong with this country. 97% of the inhabitants are apathetic, and only 3%, speak up for what they feel is moral and/or decent.
For your information lllllllllllllllllllllll, by the messages I have received since I posted that post, I know I am not alone in my thoughts about it being weird that some bootlegs* of Steve's old bands are being posted here on his forum. As we have gone over a few times in this thread, other methods of communication can be utilized to handle a transaction of this nature.
It's only basic respect, not rocket science. Tis sad that you don't see that.
By the way, you are welcome for the Laughner. I am glad that you enjoyed it.
*Kerosene - Bootleg LP released in 1991(?) on Black Death (252 87 678)
Death Wish - Bootleg CD released in 1993 on Kiss the Stone/Big Music (BIG049)
Rapeman - Bootleg from show (suspected Richmond VA, but not sure..)
Just saying, if it bothered Steve that someone posted an out of print record of his, I'm sure he would let that person know. Obviously, you read far too much into my response, esp. regarding the 'this is whats wrong with this country' part.

I didn't really mean to offend anyone, and especially not Mr. Albini. I mean, I didn't receive any messages from people that seemed to be bothered by it, but if I did, I would definitely remove it should that seem to become the popular response.
I just shared what people said they'd be interested in...I didn't copy it onto a CD and try to sell it on EBay or anything.

2664I think they would say we're working under different paradigms.
As if they would care.
Where you see them as a few "out of print albums", I was trained (as a good consumer) to see them as illegal, possibly shameful objects. One of the many ways they fuck with our heads each day; these are recordings the artists never planned on releasing, if they even knew about them. You could be lobotomized and still see that the corporations' claims of losing sales are nonsense. But media companies are inherently control freaks, as are some artists, like Frank Zappa, who REALLY hated bootlegs. No surprise there. Siouxsie and the Banshees were also big whiners, as I recall. I've drawn a blank after that. Who remembers? The thing is, these types of recordings have a stigma, for me, which you don't associate with them. I would feel ashamed to post something like that on the artists' site, plus it seems rude.
Does this make me some kind of pervert? Possibly.
Fuck it.

2666Pardons for intruding on what is becoming a little heated, but this bootleg posting thing has gotten me thinking. I'm feeling old, because when I was just getting into music that wasn't on the radio or part of my parents' album collection, well, the problem wasn't really 'how am I going to have the time to sift through overwhelming amounts of potentially great music accessible via internet', it was 'I have 30 records and no money, but I really like these bands, so I'll take whatever I can get wherever I can get it'. The second Big Black recording I heard was a bootleg live show (that sounded like it was recorded on a portable cassette deck stuffed inside a leather jacket). At that early point, one of the few ways I had access to a band that wasn't, say, Cindi Lauper, was through cassette copies of recordings passed around by fans.
I think the real points of genuine transgression occurred when someone decided to commercially release a recording not authorized by the artist.
Under the circumstances, I would personally think that it would be proper to ask someone in the band whether or not it would be proper to post a bootlegged recording that has already been in circulation for awhile. Did this happen? I mean, it is a touchy subject, obviously, but...well, this is the website attached to Mr. Albini's recording studio, and I don't think it is difficult to contact him regarding the subject. I seem to remember a post stating that he doesn't support unauthorized filesharing, but that it is a trend beneath his concern. I wonder if this fully applies to recordings of bands he has actually been in. Once again, maybe someone should ask and get an explicit answer...

2667It's a funny one all right. I remember the panic we all flew into when some record company heavies busted the record/cd fair we'd set up. Lots of scampering about and removal of U2 and Metallica boots, lots of unhappy music stand people. At the time I was furious at the iniquity of it: the only people buying the boots were fans, hardcore fans, and the idea that they wouldn't buy an official live release on the grounds that they had n unofficial ones seemed ridiculous. Of course, that was before the days of soundboarding every gig and flogging versions of them a la Pixies. I don't particularly see the problem with filesharing sundry live gigs; it sort of removes the bullshit argument that they tried with us: that the money from the bootlegs was being funnelled directly into criminal organisations, making us indirectly responsible for drug-running, weapon crime and kiddy-fiddling.rayj wrote:Pardons for intruding on what is becoming a little heated, but this bootleg posting thing has gotten me thinking.
I guess demos/sessions are slightly more dubious, but the situation remains: the fans want the stuff, it sustains them between official releases, and they'll generally buy the official versions anyway, should they ever come out.
Posting Big Black/Rapeman boots on EA is, I think, a different matter again, but the last time I yapped about sendspace posts I got called a "douche" or a gay or something, so fuck it, knock yourselves out.

2669Okay, I took down the boots.
Why? I did a little thinking, and I'm pretty embarassed by what I did.
My apologies.

2670Ten Grand - The Comprehensive List of Everyone Who Has Ever Done Anything Wrong To Us
By turns thoughtful and melancholy, dissonant and mathy. This is a fairly interesting record, despite the shrill, Transistor Transistor-style vocals.
--Link removed, sorry--
Ruins - Stone Henge
The godfathers of Japanese prog-noise rock. This is their 2nd LP (1990) and it's some pretty raw stuff. Good, though.

Frontier - Heater
Trancey space rock with hip-hop and drum & bass overtones, featuring 2 guitars with lots of time-delay effects. This album was engineered by steve, but it's out of print at this time. I posted a live album by Frontier (titled Recorded live at the Empty Bottle 7.23.96), earlier in this thread. If you liked that, you'll definitely want to hear this.
