BadComrade: So, in response to my point about "equal undertakings" or whatever, you said -- wait, I'll find it. Hang on. No, wait. I could have sworn I saw... Hmm. There's something in your post about the Mona Lisa, but it's not at all in reference to my point in bringing it up. In fact, it seems like you've just skirted the point I made, and gone off on the whole "it's just not the same thing" tangent again. I don't see anything in what you wrote that addresses anything I respon--
Saaaaayyy -- WAIT a minute. I GET IT. This is more of that thing where I miss your point because I'm new here & don't get your "gist," right? OK, OK, you got me. Looks like I'm gonna have to keep my eye on you, you clever little dickens!
Antero: I know, right?

272Oh, & just a side comment -- guitar-buying economics are just part of the equation; show me a Harlem projects apartment with a basement or a garage & I'll show you why rap never happened.
[Edit:]
Mark Van Deel: I agree. Much as I want to like the Roots, I can't ever really sit through a whole album. Same goes for live rap w/live bands; generally just feels not quite right. The best example I've seen of this (the exception that proves the rule, maybe) was LL Cool J's MTV Unplugged performance back in maybe 1990 or so. Totally incredible, over the top energy. "Mama Said Knock You Out" was particularly impressive. I wish they'd put that out on disc sometime.

Except for those deodorant nuggets that were clinging to his pits! Remember that? Every time he held up the mic or raised hands to clap, you could see these white foamy clumps of Sure stuck on his armpit hair. Shit was kinda gross.
EDIT: Well I finally listened to the chopped screwed stuff and I have realized that I was the original chopped DJ. When I was a teen I used to take acid and slow down my mom's Beatles records. Wild Honey Pie is trippy as fuck on slow.

274Boombats: Whoa, I DO remember that! I think my brain suppressed that memory for me until now, though. Um, thanks for bringing it back.
BadComrade: Game, set & match -- all yours. I can see why you have the reputation you spoke of. Your internet message board debate skills are up there with the best of them.

275Mr. Graham-
If you want some criticism, here goes. Of course, my criticism is based upon my personal tastes, etc.
I like what you're doing here, but...well, it's all a bit 'mellow' for my ear. I was hoping for a brutal noisy meltdown, and I got an occasionally creepy, smooth thing. Which I'm assuming was your goal...
Pop some dexadrine/etc. with that syrup, get pissed, and destroy it a bit more viciously.
Other than that, well, it's well done. I like it and have listened to it a couple of times so far...until my computer blew up, that is...

276My advice would be, approach it more as producing a complete mix than messing with individual tracks ... what are you juxtaposing and how do the tracks bleed into each other ...

277Thanks for the thoughts, you guys. That's exactly the kind of insight I was hoping to get here. The points you called out strike uncomfortably close to my rookie DJ skills; when I get better, I'll be able to create longer & more fluid mixes; at the moment, it's still song by song. (Which isn't to say I couldn't cheat & roll a bunch together via Audacity or something).
& rayj, I think when I get "Doris" sorted, you may enjoy it more. Tracks like "Rambler" & the Ui one have a sparser feel, which lends itself really well to certain elements of the chop/screw treatment, but it doesn't provide the kind of "noisy meltdown" that busier, denser tracks do. I'm exploring that direction too.
Thanks again; I appreciate the thoughtful & useful responses.

278I listened to them, and yeah, that's 99% of what he did; we were, however, talking about a field of activity rather than just him doing what he's doing. We were talking about DJs and turntablism, and even if you actually were restricting your comments to him, rather than the instrument/practice as a whole (as you clearly seemed to be), you're unjustifiably compressing and dilating the topic of discussion in a fashion that is argumentatively useless.BadComrade wrote:I take it you haven't listened to his "chopped and screwed" MP3s. 99% of what he did was slow songs down. That's almost all he did.
So, yes, I am comparing "one isolated physical action" to all thing things you say I am, because he pretty much only performed one isolated physical action.
Retard.
