Right, just like my day job enables mine.
The keyboardist/guitarist in my band is a Starbucks employee, and he is about to pour around $700 of his Starbucks paychecks into our new record. Does this make us evil? Sellouts?
EDIT: I'll take that one step farther. He recently joined the band, and we of course knew what he did for a living at the time. Should we also come under fire for hiring a Starbucks employee and letting him join the band?
The only difference here is that Steve Albini, the public indie "icon," is associated with both his day job and his hobby, whereas we are not.
But there's a definite distinction between
working for them and having them release/sell your bands music. We all have to work in this world, and if you choose to work at Starbucks, fine. I doubt anyone would have a problem with that. Leaving out other examples on why I don't like Starbucks, I think I've had worse jobs, compared.
The bone to pick here is the fact Sonic Youth chooses to release something with Starbucks like a happy meal for adults.
The post of mine that you quoted was in response to scott's point regarding Steve choosing to record douchebags occasionally as part of his day job. I understand the objection people are having to the idea (true or not) of SY releasing a record with Starbucks.
And for the record, i share Colonel Panic's distaste for the McDonald's/Starbucks comparison.

It doesn't matter, I won't be buying the Starbucks CD no matter who puts it out. After ATP in July my Sonic Youth days will be behind me for good.
By the way, am I the only one here who hated having O'Rourke in the band? Because that was the biggest piece of shit in the whole pile.

yeah McDonald's coffee is a lot better and way cheaper
that Iced Coffee they are selling? it's like a buck and fucking delicious
the same shit at Starbucks is what, 6 bucks?

I really hate Jim O'Rourke, but he plays on Murray Street and Murray Street is a fine record so I can't say shit about his time in SY

That said, if one band I had affection for were to release an album through Starbucks it'd probably be Sonic Youth.
Whether or not this interview is a joke, it's a good discussion. I'm sure some other band that we've enjoyed will do this down the road.
Right on, Skronk. You can substitute any band you have respect for in this discussion. If it is, in fact, a joke now, it won't be later, and you can bet on that. So, we may be actually hashing out this issue in ADVANCE.
Once again the PRF
sets the motherfuckin' trend.

And since we're on the record here... why on EARTH do any of you read Pitchfork, or even pay attention to them? I'm coming from a place I come from now and again, a place of total ignorance, in that I've never read Pitchfork other than once or twice when people posted a link to something of theirs. I honestly don't remember one damn thing I've ever read on Pitchfork, except that they gave Travistan a zero out of 10, which was pretty funny. I think I've always had a sneaking suspicion that Pitchfork is really, really not for me. Kinda like how I never joined up on Friendster when everybody else was.
Seriously people. Pitchfork?!?! Get with the times, maaaaaann!!

oh, you try that Vanilla Iced Coffee at McD's and you'll change your tune right quick, trust me.
They give you about a gallon of the shit for a buck and some change, lasts me a good 3 hours just sipping away.

I wasn't comparing the quality of Starbucks with McDonald's, but both are a fast-food type establishment. "Get in, get out" sort of mentality.

I didn't say I was sick of him.
Well, I'm sick of him. I wish he'd go play with some kittens or something.
hey douchebag, you're the one that started the "clocker Bob was right" thread immediately after he said he was 'bowing out', so shut the fuck up, or act accordingly.
for example, you could go play with your pussy for a change.

But Starbucks has newspapers and very comfy couches!
