There was a fair amount of back and forth on the old forum about Wenders's Until the End of the World, a divisive enough film based on its length alone. Lost somewhere in the discussion was that Hurt was really good in it. It's worth seeing at least once if you've got 287 minutes to spare, especially the restored version on Criterion.

Went on a bit of a Cronenberg tear during the first year of the pandemic and saw A History of Violence for the first time. Overall a solid film. Kind of a riff on/update of Out of the Past. Hurt was skilled at playing a sleazy rich guy beholden to none.

I know he had several prominent roles over the years, but on the more humanist side of the spectrum, his role in Smoke is among the highlights.

William Hurt had one of his children with Sandrine Bonnaire (of Agnes Varda's Vagabond fame), so there's that, and he was a likable, skilled performer. I had no idea he had been ill. Gone too soon. R.I.P.

Re-watched Altered States last night. Totally underrated, despite a few slices of cheese. I’d love to take psychedelics in a floatation/sensory deprivation tank.

Been meaning to see Altered States for a while now, but flubbed the opportunities to see it when it was on the Criterion Channel and Hulu. Have surmised it's sort of a "thinking man's cult movie," worth seeing at least once. Will have to rent it soon.

Anyway, after posting the above about Hurt, it came to my attention that some of his past partners have claimed he was abusive in relationships. Don't know all of the details, but if true, that's all news to me. I still think he was a good actor.


But let it be known that just because I vouch for someone's work, it doesn't mean I'd also endorse every aspect of them as a person.

And the opposite is the case, too: just because I don't care for someone's work, doesn't mean I'm writing off their entire existence.


Might be very tedious to point this out, but I can just imagine keeling over some day (any day now!), and someone dredging up a post somewhere, thinking I was an apologist for all sort of things that didn't come into play in my assessment of someone or something. Oh well.

Yeah I know it's not INDEE ROK to like this band but the dude was a phenomenal drummer - I never heard a Taylor Hawkins drum track I didn't like.

Yes, my feelings as well. Seemed like a kind soul with an effortless positive enthusiasm. Very sad he left behind a family as well.

Yeah that's pretty shocking, from the outside he seemed to be living out is dreams. 50 is damn cruel..

The first headline I saw sure did find the most "died in Bogota" picture they could paired with the caption "Hawkins found dead in Bogota", though..
