True. Also the only reason to cut vents in it is so you can be reassured there is a tube in there. It wont generate enough heat to warrant ventillation. Awhile back a FM (dont remember who, sorry!) gave me a couple 5840W subminiature pentodes that would be rad for this kind of thing, numberthirty wrote: Wed Sep 14, 2022 8:19 pmTo me?ErikG wrote: Wed Sep 14, 2022 5:04 pm Cool thing or glowing gimmick? Re: Generic Gear Opinion Request Thread
272Why not both?
The light itself is absolutely a gimmick generated by colored LEDs but that in no way determines how good it might sound.
There were lots of folks who dismissed the Gamechanger Plasma series as a gimmick but it really does do "a thing" different than other things despite the fact that it also looks like a tesla coil. But it's that plasma doohickey that actually generates the sound as opposed to the aforementioned pedal which adds colored LEDs which suggests that they're attempting to catch out the unwary because ooh shiny.
That said, I'm sure it does look cool on a pedal board and who here can honestly say that's zero value-add? I think we are all into aesthetics to some degree even if it's an anti-aesthetics aesthetic.
Re: Generic Gear Opinion Request Thread
273That's my thinking. I like the unholy glow. Looks fun so I ordered one.
Also the guy seems pretty cool so I'm happy to try one out.
If nothing else I'll run the SR-16 through it and bask in the green light.

274I love how almost none of what he built had labeled controls at all, as if he couldn't have said more "I only built this for me"llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Wed Sep 14, 2022 9:43 pmIs 9v enough to power a tube? 275Maybe similar to the bevis audio 12au7 amp that's been around the block.

276Went ahead and ordered one of those Edison dawgs as well--curious to hear how it compares w/ the Thermionic TE-01 tube pedal I'm using as an always on pedal right now. Definitely looks like it'll be smaller and if I can not get another power supply even better.

277Interested to hear your opinion on the Edison. The only pedals I occasionally use for mild dirt are a sansamp bddi (ok but robs definition and gets shrill if I turn up treble or presence to compensate) or a Boss OD-3 (cool but cuts lows and is a little too...obvious?)tallchris wrote: Thu Sep 15, 2022 2:33 pm Went ahead and ordered one of those Edison dawgs as well--curious to hear how it compares w/ the Thermionic TE-01 tube pedal I'm using as an always on pedal right now. Edit: for bass guitar.
Re: Generic Gear Opinion Request Thread
278Any of the low-voltage tube pedals I've played, even with a subminiature tube designed for that voltage range... really do anything to me that couldn't be had for somewhere between a rangemaster and a rat for flavour of distortion, without the effort/drawback of the tube. I always want it to be imparting something inspiring, but hasn't been so significant
now the tube fuzz circuit in a garnet amp running at he-man DC volts, now we are talking. Barely controllable. Go from paper tearing to a cummings engine running underwater.

279This is just begging my brain to investigate. I think its certainly doable, but might need to be big-ish. If memory serves correct the stinger thing is really just a boost unit that slams another tube to distort it. You'd need two tubes but that's not too hard. Run it off a 12V supply for direct filaments and a switched power supply would easily get you ~250V for the HT.TylerDeadPine wrote: Fri Sep 16, 2022 6:02 pm now the tube fuzz circuit in a garnet amp running at he-man DC volts, now we are talking. Re: Generic Gear Opinion Request Thread
280Hey so I have two Garnet amps with the Stinger circuit and they sound quite different. In the smaller amp the fuzz kind of sounds like a Mosrite type buzzy fuzzy thing that is super cool. In the big Garnet I sent you a long time ago it sounds god-like, like the end of the world. Closer in tonality to the Herzog. I know they’re totally not the same thing, but its a useful comparison. I’d be interested to hear what is all out there circuit wise because they don’t sound the same at all, and I don’t think its a matter of only a small amp vs big - it sounds as if they were two different effects, so to speak.Dr Tony Balls wrote: Sat Sep 17, 2022 10:06 amThis is just begging my brain to investigate. I wonder if you happened to check out the circuit then?
