So I have been window shopping and its wild that you spend over $1000 on a guitar and they want to give you a gigbag instead of a hardcase with your purchase. When the hell did that change (says the guy that has bought most of his guitars from people in person)?
To each their own. If I bought a guitar and it came with a hard case, that case is going promptly into the closet and the guitar into a gigbag. That's locational though...dont have a car, dont wanna walk a mile to practice holding a case.
I think for me it is a matter of spending X and getting a $30 bag that isn't sitting right with me. I have a good bag much like what Tyler mentioned and if I am running around back and forth from practice that is what I would use, it fits pretty much any guitar. BUT, if/when I move or tour, I want the option of a hardcase that will protect better. Once all guitars and basses have hardcases and I end up with more hardcases I would probably just sell them as they are more valuable than a bag and buy a pedal or new cables or something.

I'm late to the ribbon game and had one for a long time that only got seldom use but it wasn't until recently that I found a couple applications that opened my eyes and now I'm all-in.
I've been recording drums with stereo room pair of ribbon mics for 5 years now. It's an acquired taste but it's sort of like a silky quality that also has nice definition. Understated, but cool.
