The song he does himself (Oh, Suzana) is very well done, and the guitar playing is as good, if not better than what Ian can do. I don't know who writes what in the new Don Cab, but Damon could easily write all of their material.

If you like Damon's guitar playing on that comp, you should check out Thee Speaking Canaries. Damon plays guitar and sings. It sounds like Damon doing Van Halen and the always amazing Noah Leger plays drums.

Yup... I have Songs for the Terrestrially Challenged, and I also enjoy Noah's band Hurl quite a bit... Damon's got it covered.

Though, we've all heard stories about him being a complete jerk... The Belini debacle alone is really condemning.

Anyway, I don't have to deal with him. I just watch them play and listen to their stuff. It seems a lot of indie bands of the progressive/math rock variety are composed of band members that are uber-knobs, pretentious, or are just plain assholes. Maybe it's because they feel superior to most other bands?

I've learned to avoid contact with these types. In the end, it's irrelevant, and you might end up disliking their material for all the wrong reasons.

Damon Che -- musician, songwriter, etc. GREAT
Damon Che -- drinking buddy with a fan? Probably not a good idea. I don't know... I wouldn't even attempt it.

Generalizations applied, pop punk rockers tend to be the coolest "rock stars" to hang with. Even ones that make some money and are well known have always been nice to me... Adam Phaler, Lance Hahn and Jesse Buglione, to name-drop a few...

^Is this dude a troll? I can never remember.

Does everyone else agree with the description of Don Cab as a metal band?

I never thought that at all. Allmusic describes them as Math rock, Instrumental Rock, Indie Rock, Noise-Rock, Post-Rock and Experimental.

I'd agree with all of those but not metal. They're heavy, sure, but they dont seem to be informed by metal or aiming for that kind of sound.

Mike Banfield: short hair, glasses, Pittsburgher, ultra nice dude.

Jon Fine: never met 'im, but the Bitch Magnet album to get is Umber. Orestes Morfin: another damn fine drummer. The drumming on "Navajo Ace" slays/melts. Ben Hur...was ok. Didn't do it for me the way Umber did, and as I've said elsewhere, I was a bit disappointed that Orestes was out of the band when I saw them, shortly before they packed it in.

Damon Che: great drummer, and in my experience, a nice guy. To me, anyway.

I agree that they aren't a "metal" band, but I definately hear a little metal in their sound. Definately a little Voivod, among other things.

I just imagine that there were just a couple guys who work for Relapse who dug the band, and thusly courted them. I can definately see people into metal getting into say, Don Cab 2. Especially fans of say, Dillinger Escape Plan or Dysrythmia or something.
Police Teeth: we like Void so much, we decided not to sound like them.

I actually toured as a fill-in drummer for Creta Bourzia a few years ago... they are really nice guys and truly, top-notch musicians.

Damon actually toured as a bass player for Creta Bourzia the tour before that. He really respects those guys a lot as musicians... (something I think was lacking, respect, in the later days of the other Don Cab lineup.)

I've seen the new lineup twice, and they are more than capable... the new stuff to me sounded like a nice midpoint between 2 and What Burns.

Is it over yet? If so I'll go check out this lineup. Let us know.

Do they play with these?

My pretty pony! Why, Zorak, why? You could have had any woman you wanted! But you chose the woman I love almost as much as I love myself! You ruined my life, you ruined her life, and now, I'm going to ruin your life!!!

The early shit is good instrumental thrash, live they ruled back then but the record is just a good thrash record nothing earth shaking.
'What burns' is where it all got real interesting, for me anyway.
