Work Christmas Parties

Mine is tonight. I am not going.

The theme is 'bling and sparkle.' Frankly, if the theme was 'indie rocker', I probably still wouldn't go.

Years ago I worked for a company in the Chrysalis group, who owned Heart FM. Our Xmas party DJs were Pat Sharp and (the increasingly inaccurately named) David 'Kid' Jensen. Poptastic!

Mine was last night.

I did not go because they went to a restaurant where it was £30 for a three course meal.

I've still got to go to two lunches next week though..... bah.

He went to bed about a decade ago, or whenever he sold his soul to the bankers and the elites.

The firm where my girlfriend works is throwing one of these parties, one where partners/spouses of the employees are invited. Only catch is that I would need a suit.
I have resisted buying a suit for my entire life up till now, and would not be particularly disposed to finally cave in and get one for an event like this. It looks like showing up without a suit is not an option. But if I showed up in a Santa Claus suit, maybe I could sneak in long enought to help myself to some food at the buffet...

Our localized I.T. party is Friday at Hannegan's

Hannegan's is named for one of Missouri's leading New Deal politicians, St. Louis' "big boss" Robert E. Hannegan.

Each table or booth displays a plaque inscribed with the name of a senator who voted to repeal Prohibition.

Modeled after the U.S. Senate Dining Room...

Come celebrate a time when people gathered together and gave honor to the political process....

The Caucus Room provides unique ambience with black and white photos of politicians gracing the walls...

You can almost hear the gavels pounding well-worn tables...

Hrm... well, anyhow - drinks/appetizers start around 4, dinner at 5. Always nice to knock off work a bit early and eat/drink on the company dime, so I can't complain.

Quite a few people I work with park at The Arch parking garage... which has already prompted a spiel from a concerned co-worker:

Man, you guys be careful afterwards, especially if you're parked in The Arch garage... you know those National Park rangers be followin' people to their cars, right? And then you're looking at a FEDERAL DUI. No shit, man.

I thought he was just talking crazy, but apparently this really happens:

SO REMEMBER, KIDS - NO FEDERAL DUIs THIS WEEKEND!

(How about just none altogether!? Since we've recently had a nice, new billiards table installed in our lounge/lunchroom, there is plenty of speculation that the "party" will move from the bar back to the office, where we can shoot pool, watch TV and get the coffeepots brewing full-tilt. We'll see how that plan pans out...)

Mine's in a few hours at the board of trade building.

I have a few guidelines I have set for myself this year:

- you are not a stockbroker. you cannot drink like one. do not attempt to keep up.
- no making fun of anybody's choice of wardrobe to their faces.
- a joke is only going to be funny the first time you tell it.
- do not drunk dial steve.
- nobody at your office gets black metal jokes.
- please refrain from turning office jargon into double-entendre.
- the people you encounter on your way home can see for themselves that "dude" you are "so fucked up right now".
