I don't know what rock you've been sleeping under but the club has changed. If anything it has gone back to it's roots punk rock. There has only been a handful of stoner rock bands there since Gus left to organize karaoke at prairie meadows. If anything it's more rock, punk, hardcore, indy, etc... aka it's wide open since October they have had everything from The Misfits and Clutch to Acumen Nation and Still Life Decay. It is the CBGBs of Iowa. Yeah it was great when Shawn owned it Blah, Blah, Blah. Well DaVo was booking it then and he's booking it now with Jeff, who by the way has been bring live music to this city since the late 80s.

The days of metal ruling the place is over for that you need to go to House of Bingo, ah I mean House of Bricks. If you want Numetal fame that is being the big fish is the small pond of metal that is post slipknot Des Moines then it is the place to be. This Sam kid does bring a lot of other shit in as far as Pop Punk and Indy stuff but otherwise it is a mall metal dream.

The Mews sucks, you can't smoke there, the bar tenders and employees are know for not only shitty serve but for treating bans like shit, also the sound is really low and the set up of the tiny little stage sucks ass but if you proudly wear the White belt it seems like the place for you.

There is a load of Restrantes in the city from your basic chain place to a lot of ethnic places off the beaten path. From Italian to Thia. If you look you are going to find it. There's also a new Science Center, a good Art Center, etc.. all could be improved but for a city of it's size are good.

The thing to also think about is you are 2 hours away from Omaha, 3 or 4 from Kansas City and Minneapolis and 5 hours from Chicago. If it happening here it's just a short road trip away.

Everyone hates their hometown and most don't even know what's here. If you haven't found it you are not looking hard enough and if it ain't here then do something about it. Des Moines is clean, low crime, no real gangs and they report ever murder on the nightly news.

There's a bar called Hairy Mary's that is kind of a stoner-rocker's dream come true. Lots of Frank Kozik posters and schwag there.

Umm yeah, I'm from Minneapolis. Home of AmRep Records.

I've been to Hairy Mary's one (1) time and it is a great place. I like stoner rock and the staff there played all sorts of crazy stuff on the stereo when I was there. The decor of the bar is pretty sweet and has many a sweet poster on the wall.

The very fact that Hairy Mary's had Sicbay play there (we're not exactly an AmReppy or Estrus-style band) is proof of what a nice place it is.

To Mr. Bradley R. Weissenberger, did you go to Iowa?

Yes.

I never took you for a Hawkeye.

I do not know what this means.

i once read (i think in a psychology textbook) that a hilariously disproportioned number of participants in said workshop suffered from either a personality disorder or some form of diagnosable depression. something like 40%.
