Because I, as I so often do, neglected to vote on the goddamn subject after making my post.
Here. That brings it at least to 50/50. Still alarmingly high pro-Soundgarden crowd here...

I loaned a friend UltramegaOK and Louder Than Love,
years ago and he later claimed to have given them back when actually he never did.
I bought UltramegaOK on cassette at a store in Missouri last summer, and listened to it a bunch of times since then. I like some of the songs on that album very, very, very much. I am glad I replaced it. And I also look forward to replacing Louder Than Love, which I really liked back in highschool and college.

Growing old does not suck! I am sad for you if you really think that it does!

Only meant this in re driving around a lake in a jeep with bombastic cock rock blasting through the speakers. Were one to do so at middle age, one would look foolish.
Of course, one who now drives a Volvo and blasts "Angelfuck" by the Misfits on the way to the office is not foolish, but rather in touch with all that is good in the world.

I am of the strong opinion that this is the ultimate measure of a band's worth.

I have mixed feelings. I can see the argument for their worth as a "gateway" band, and I think Soundgarden and bands like them were good in that they caused people to wake up and realize that hair metal is not real rock music.
The bad side was the second coming of classic hard rock, which punk tried to do away with as a paradigm. The ironic thing was that this so-called "grunge" music was marketed as "alternative" to mainstream pop and rock. And I don't think I need to recapitulate the rest of this narrative here on this forum...
As for the music itself, I do not care for Soundgarden. Chris Cornell sings like he hasn't taken a shit for 5 years and the songwriting is mediocre.

I'm gonna break this rusty cage.....
and crap.
Boring riffs and melodies, and a singer who always struck me as the David Coverdale of 'grunge.'
But they were from Seattle, and their timing was good.
And they were clearly better than Skid Row.

Alright. So a lot of people hate Soundgarden. Fine. Whatever. But, for the life of me I can't figure out how it's ok to like super-slick bubble-gum fucking pop bands like ABBA on this board, but not a hard rock band. I don't get it. You can hate on Soundgarden, I'm not 16 anymore where we would've had to fight about that. But why hate on Soundgarden, and give big ups to ABBA? I don't get it.
