Grohl himself has admitted, "I'm one big rip-off!" He's cited Bonham as a source for many of his flashy tricks.
He sure hit hard, but live recordings suggest that he had tempo problems. If you have access to a bootleg, listen to the bridge on "Come As You Are." Giddyup!
Still, Nirvana could've done a lot worse, drummer-wise. As an overall musician, he was a close second to Cobain.

32pointing out that grohl copies jon boham is as necessary as pointing out the romans copied the greeks. all drummers cop bonham, including the ones who never heard him play.

33I'm guessing you have the same mp3's that I have. I have 16 tracks of "In Utero Unmastered". The tracks are a bit faster than the official version. All of these tracks also have a weird tremolo effect to them in some parts of the songs, like when the cymbals ring out. I heard these were a bad copy from a cassette. That's all I know though. I do hope to find a better version someday though.babalot wrote:hi, i have downloaded a version of in utero that seems to be the "albini mix". i don't know if it's been discussed yet (and how many times you read a similar question) but... is it pitched or what?

I'd guess the "tremolo" effect is probably a symptom of a crap mp3 encoding. It's been known to make higher frequencies (especially those made by cymbals) sound wet and jiggly. It ruins so many good recordings.

36I'm curious to hear this "Jon Boham" fellow. Maybe Courtney blew Kurt's brains out for his failure to locate this dude?

37I always suspected this forum was a haven for anal retards (possibly why I spend so much time on it) but c'mon people!
I'm sure if the guy who said Grohl speeds up a little live would have definitely turned him down at auditions for whatever band he plays in...right? Ever thought he speeds up because he's excited/into it/having fun/not really giving a shit? All good reasons to go crazy on the tempo in my book. You want rigid tempos get a drum machine or get Damon Che or that dude from Hella.
The only problem I have with listening back to Nirvana these days is that the lyrics get too much for me in the whole high school teen angst front. A little too self referencing to stand the test of time. Which makes it fortunate it's such a great voice singing them. The music still cuts it for me.
As for the pitch thing - I grew up playing guitar to Nirvana records and it used to drive me nuts that I had to tune down 1/2 a step for In Utero. I remember reading somewhere that the band tuned down for the recordings as the guitars sounded better. I'd guess it's more likely the pitch differences are the result of a dodgy tape machine somewhere along the very long chain of bootleggers rather than a whole pitch shift on a mix. Though it's possible I suppose.

39i just downloaded a couple of the "albini mix" in utero songs.
the only changes i noticed were on heart shaped box and all apologies.
drums are louder and a little more panned out and vocals are different. everything else sounds about the same. pitch of the songs are higher.
dave grohl is an excellent drummer.
thank you. good night.

40I actually really liked Krist as a bass player
listen to lithium, the verse AND the "I like it, I'm not gonna crak part" he plays a sweet sweet fill in there
he has some other really cool basslines in my opinion, I liked him a lot
