Brett Eugene Ralph wrote:The rule in English is that singular nouns, even those referring to groups, get treated as singular unless you're specifically referring to members of the group.
This is precisely what my editors said to me re: "Fugazi." Same with your examples of "crowd" and "couple." Those are singular nouns/entities made up of multiple individuals. Y'know, like Congress.
I was the one arguing against regular, "correct" English usage in re: band names. One of my main arguments for this approach (in addition to the Flaming Lips and Bright Eyes examples I detailed above) was the way that singular team names are referred to in much of sports journalism -- as faux-plurals despite how they read, because of their status as collections of individuals.
"Transmissions" on the other hand is
not a singular noun, so it should be "The Transmissions
are a good band,"
and "The Transmissions
are hitting on members of the audience," whether they do this collectively or not. Same with "The Transmissions
have an album coming out on Sub Pop."

The band I started with my best friend is named Lazar Wolf, after the butcher in Fiddler on the Roof. I came up with the idea but then quickly decided that it was retarded. The other band members loved it.
Now I realize it's fucking great. Too bad there're about a million other wolf bands.
I left to go to school in NY, but they're still going strong. In fact, they're much better without me. I need to post some of their songs...
Anyways, NOT CRAP.

Screwdriver - not crap, but then we found out that there was a skinhead band called screwdriver. this was crap.
Dead Passenger - bad pun on screwdriver... you can tell we were creative 9th graders.
The Groundlings - better than screwdriver, but the same shitty band. crap.
Mrs. Darling Manifest - perhaps a little pretentious, but it fit the music.. i still like it, even though i mainly refer to the group or music as simply "manifest". Not Crap.
Tulabit - inside joke. the band is a couple of weeks (a month maybe?) old, so i really can't decide on this one. i like the joke, but it's spelled so folks pronounce the joke right (2 libbit). eh. not crap.

Our band name is dumb. It was our guitarist's idea. We have some pretty rad song titles, though.

Rashied Garrison isn't my real name. My parents weren't crazy Coltrane fans, mores the pity.

My new band is called Them Apples. There aren’t many members – one – but goddammit, the unity of purpose is blazing. We may even consider an alter ego of The Mapples.
We’re called Them Apples in honour of the people I’m waiting around forever for to get their shit together and make a band with me, the people I failed to get a band together with when I had the chance, and also for the people who attend the gigs in my town (and no doubt elsewhere, obviously, but particularly the people in my town) who are just far too cool for school to bother with those they don’t see as being on the same level of coolness as their shiny arses. I look forward to the spring, happily doing it for myself (should others remain untranspirational) in front of these fuckers, all the time being the great Them Apples, as in
SO HOW DO YOU FUCKING LIKE THEM APPLES??!!!
My band is great and its name is not crap.
If anyone thinks differently, please pm me. I've been very wrong before.
