See I have always thought of it as a pretty honest, if goofy/weird/Pavement-y doffing of the cap.

It's probably several things all at once.

Cool guitar sound.

Billy Corgan wrote:The Pavement thing was really silly and immature. But honestly, I don't really think we're that singled out. I think basically any problems that have ever existed exist in that Sonic Youth, Pavement, Jesus Lizard, you know, that segment of indier-than-though, I think they take umbrage with a band that can basically do what they do but better and have more success than they have. Because apparently, in their mindset--and this is the problem with their mind set--they think that being cool and having these cool friends equals the kids are going to respond to what you're doing. And that's that very kind of thinking that separates them from the audience. They can sleep at night thinking they're the coolest people on the planet but the fact of the matter is, kids don't get up in the morning and listen to those bands. Kids don't fall in love listening to those bands. And that's the difference. And I think that's what causes the friction.

What a petulant twerp. He's a very hate-able man.

Billy, the mature response: "Oh, that Pavement song? Heh, it's a funny song."

Stupid Billy.

yep...and then the kids grow up, get out of high school, finally develop their tastes and stop listening to the "accessible" first thing the radio introduced them to and start listening to the aforementioned "cool" bands...at least the ones that care about music...

take THAT, Billy Corgan!

other than the songs: in more or less every interview with pavement, some member of the band, usually stephen, will inexplicably mention how X band is sub-par in some way. it often sounds like praise at first but turns into a criticism by the end. and it's often unclear if he's joking. i find it very humourous.

You could just say they're from Wisconsin.

No, see, you're supposed to be slagging us, not showering us with praise.

No, see, you guys are supposed to be showering.

yes we will start showering you with something the next time we see you, it won't make you happy, wait it might make YOU happy but it wouldn't make most "normal people" happy.

ooh! I do hope it's chudge!

If you wanna call it "chudge," then fine, it's "chudge."

I remember reading a good interview where he was talking about how Weezer wasn't healthy and how great bands like Oasis are. I guess this was around 95 or 96. Somewhere on these internets is Pavement covering "Wonderwall". It's pretty funny. As is their cover of "Something" by The Beatles.

There's a fIREHOSE song, 'For the Singer of REM', which seems to be having a dig at them but it's pretty abstract too. Something about 'Don't forget to forget what rock and roll is for...'
