I'm sorry...

what?

I saw Lightning Bolt at Webster Hall in Manhattan. In a few weeks, Converge will be opening for Mastodon at that same venue. So my point was that the messengerbagwearingskinnyassedhipsters will only allow themselves exposure to specific instances and preselected expressions of a metall-esque sound.

So if the messengerbagwearingskinnyassedhipsters do not show up for Converge and Mastodon, this will have been the reason rather than merely liking Lightning Bolt more than Converge or Mastodon? I see.

Lightning Bolt's live show is energizing. Mastodon's, last I saw, was wholly not. But I'll let you keep your assumptions.

My point was that LB is "metal" for those who can only handle such music sparingly. I'm not sure why they're so hipster-potable but they are.

Maybe it's LB's "wank" factor? Metal in hipster art student packaging? Or maybe it's because these hipsters believe that this band, called "Lightning Bolt," is working within some kind of faux-irony and therefore these people can freely "rock out" with emphasis on the quotation marks?

As a non-messengerbagwearingskinnyassedhipster I can only guess why the messengerbagwearingskinnyassedhipsters you speak of like LB and not Mastodon and Converge, or whatever other bands you think embody the "true" metal.

I'm not sure why you are so convinced that being hip or carrying a bag has anything to do with liking one band over another, but it's a sentiment that seems to permeate this board's userbase and (I'm sorry) it is bullshit. Lightning Bolt simply sound better, to some people, than these Mastoverges you're so fond of.

I would love to hear Converge try and cover the first 36 seconds, much less the entirety, of "Bizarro Zarro Land."

First off, Converge could definitely do it.

Second, I'm not looking to debate you on this. I was taking a cheap shot at much of LB's fanbase because...why the fuck not.

As to "true" metal, sir, I could not give less than a shit about what is or isn't "true metal." I was just pointing out how such people will only expose themselves to a particular aggressive band if they have the right packaging/stance.

I feel like I've already made this clear. Read Krystofsky's post if you're still confused.

Bolt.

I'm actually shocked that people don't understand how tight these two
guys are. Listen to Captain Caveman - that shit is just as tight as anything
released in the last twenty years. Dracula Mountain - freaky tight. These
two guys are the second cumming of Prog-Rock.

And the great sound they get recording straight to 2 trk DAT! Ever try and rip
Hypermagic Mountain from a p2p?

And if you don't get that half the stuff they do is tongue-in-cheek...

Hear fucking hear. Lightning Bolt are (as far as I am aware) a band operating entirely from a deep rooted DIY/punk base. The twin facts that they are really good and really 'extreme' attract attention outside of the underground. The fucking morons who crow that (say) 'oh, the idiot fanzine blog types like them now' are as punchable and annoying as the girl-trousered idiots themselves. Of course it's amazing when it's something only you know about. If it really is genuinely good it will not stay that way, and nor should it. Conduct yourself and your life well, and have away with this divisive, jejune nonsense.

Technical proficiency! Ha!

Ha ha!

85% of the members of any given audience will be socialites just there for a party. They don't listen to the complexities in the music. They think it's fun to jump around and mosh. I'm not knocking them for that, but it doesn't detract from the fact that they have no idea how to listen to music.

10% will be cool people who are honestly interested in the band (in this case, Lightning Bolt), and who are seeing them for the first time. In such a borderline-chaotic atmosphere as a Lightning Bolt gig, these 10% probably don't get to focus on the music too much. Not to mention that the music is so blindingly fast and intricate that it's really hard to take it all in at once even if you're a music connoisseur.

5% will be intelligent people who have spent time with the records, and who can formulate opinions about the band's music. Being totally obsessed with hearing the performance, they couldn't care less about what sort of beer the hirsute musclehead next to them is swigging.

This is why you see such comments as, "Lightning Bolt are not technically proficient." Carping from the peanut gallery.

I would, as stated, love to hear this. Please make it happen.

I dunno, cheap unfounded opinions? You're right, why not.

As to "true" metal, sir, I could not give less than a shit about what is or isn't "true metal."

This is not what you said the first time. Please reconcile with yourself whether or not you care what true metal is and return to the thread.

I was just pointing out how such people will only expose themselves to a particular aggressive band if they have the right packaging/stance.

And I challenge this assertion until you can provide meaningful statistical data to back it up. Maybe some people do this! But not all Lightning Bolt fans! I am one of those that do not, and I challenge you, sir!

Challenge!
