Part One - Really Important Bands I haven't heard

Graham Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers - I understand they're important. I know who they've influenced. I wonder what they sound like.

The Fall - Seminal post-punk art noise outfit. Mark E. Smith is the singer. Phantom Planets have totally ripped off their sound. All this I know without ever hearing a note. Do we really need music?

Television - Tom Verlane...blah blah...guitar...blah...New York...blab...innovative...yip yap...Marquee Moon...most important...forebearers...modern rock...etc...most influential...guitar sounds...etc...blah blab blab.

Let's crank up a thread for movies we haven't seen too. I'll go first, Citizen Kane, Stagecoach, and Forest Gump.

I've never heard the Mekons either, but if you want to check out Residents, The Commercial Album or Duck Stab/Buster & Glen are good places to start. Cloudead, Zappa and the Flying Burrito Brothers also get the thumbs up!

Slint - yes, I am the guy who doesn't own 'Spiderland'! I nearly bought it on Saturday but instead went for a Ween double album (another band I had never checked out). Should I tender my resignation from this forum?

I am pleased to report I have never listend to anything by Eamon, Sean Paul or 50 Cent.

Same here. I know nothing about MAGMA, King Crimson, or what Genesis sounded like before Phil Collins.

Also, I know nothing about "emo", beyond that first Sunny Day Real Estate record. I don't know Promise Ring or Jawbreaker either.


Funny thing about Sunny Day Real Estate, though. I loved the record when I first heard it. Played it over and over. But, unlike most of my other favorite bands, I never bothered to buy any another record. And now I just don't care. Is this lame?

Then how can you pass judgment on artists that you have never heard? That seems silly!

I have actually heard these artists. Here's my scorecard:

Eamon: "Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back)" is my second favorite pop single of 2004, so far. It's great. However, his new single, "I Love Them Ho's (Ho Wop)" is not very good.

Sean Paul: I find his music, as well as most other reggae ("dancehall" or otherwise), totally ridiculous.

50 Cent: He had one of last year's best pop singles with "In Da Club". However, his "P.I.M.P." single was a very sad exercise.

And, hey, I never thought that I would say it, but Maroon 5 ("This Love") and Usher ("Yeah") have released a couple of my favorite pop singles from 2004. Do they stir my soul? No. Do I enjoy listening to them? Yes, very much so.

Bottom line: These records and artists are almost totally inconsequential, and no one will discuss them in any meaningful manner in 2 years? 20 years? 100 years? But these little chunks of car radio candy can be very enjoyable, and it's not fair to discount them completely, particularly without having listened to them and having made an informed judgment.

The Mekons are hit or miss. It really all depends on whether or not you like Brits doing country music or post punk. I have this one album that has a white cover with a little photo in the center that's from like 81 or something. That disc rules. Find that one. I think the Gang Of Four guitarist recorded it or something. I know they used to open GoF4 all time and stuff like that.

As far as Slint goes, I think i might be in agreeance with Pen Rollings in saying that they were a great band but they ruined indie rock. Get 'Spiderland' and then try to figure out how many records you have that are derivative.

I very much want to find Bughummer. One year ago I have heard one song, and since then I try to find still something. If you have their records, please, let to me know.
