I don't have one of these and I haven't messed with them, but...
Isn't a Pod essentially the same thing as a drum machine? It's not a guitar amp, it just sounds like one (or several). It may have an artifact to its sound or it may be convincing enough in its modelling to emulate whatever it's trying to emulate. Or maybe people are using it as a distinctive tool the same way people do with drum machines.
I can say that I have heard records where it (or something like it) has obviously been used as the main guitar sound, trying to sound like a plain old guitar. I don't really like the way it sounds. I don't know Deerhoof from nothin'.

Line 6 POD pro - worth it?
32The Pod is like a lot of other digital technology out there. There is a plug-in, recently released at Namm, that records the sound of, say, a classic Pultec EQ on whatever setting you put it on. 'Models' it. You record some sort of calibration signal through it, and the software mimics it. Several 'professional' engineers couldn't tell the difference in blind tests. Of course, you have to have the Pultec in the first place...and you can only record specific settings...
It is only a matter of number-crunching and advances in software coding...eventually, you will be able to 'record' whatever sound you want to emulate, and...you will be able to emulate whomever you wish. Joy.
