It seems that Letterman just gave years back and is just going in and collecting a pay check. However, he does still throw his opinions around when given the chance and I agree with him more times than not.

The same thing happened to Letterman. He was a lot funnier when he was younger and on NBC. Letterman hasn't become a fucking hack or a coward, though...despite the fact that his show isn't terribly edgy anymore. Conan will most likely have his balls cut off, and it will be way uglier than when Letterman switched to a more ratings friendly time slot. Letterman leapt onto a fridge in a suit made of magnets and let Paul Shaffer throw silverware at him when he was still on Late Night. Conan has been pretty all right in his Late, Late slot...but was never as good as Letterman at his '80s peak. Letterman possesses a hateful and righteous Midwestern core that cannot be corrupted by network television.

I was a fan of Letterman's show in my teen years, when he was on NBC. I continued liking him for a little while after his move to CBS, but watching it in recent years I'm barely amused. I don't know if it's because he sucks now, or because he's been doing many of the same gags for 25 years, or because my sense of humor has changed. Probably some from all columns.

One thing about late night shows, is that it isn't ever set in stone as to who will inherit the throne. look what happened with leno.

right now, jon stewart is probably in the mix. between the point where leno and letterman retire, there will likely emerge even another person. conan could get fucked over the way letterman did.

for whatever reason, leno seems to play well to middle america. letterman having started at 12:30 never really fit in. He's watered down his show to appeal to mainstream tastes and his show sucks because of it.

imagine chappelle having to be on network teevee. it would suck. that's why his films are average. comedy central is for the most part aimed to be edgy so they allowed it. it's demographic is a younger audience.

these fuckers are 100% into marketing. it makes their jobs easier and allows them to maximize there ad revenue. "oh, our audience is 40+ in age? Let's sell some life insurance ads and luxury cars."

however, if you are on comedy central you are running girls gone wild commercials.

both letterman and leno are supposedly incredibly witty and sharp. their respective shows do mirror their personality, but in the way that they are able to adapt their humor to mainstream tastes.

for me, I have to give letterman the nod, because he was incredibly innovative during his years at 12:30.

in regards to minotaur's letterman vs. conan, I don't know if I fully agree. conan is indebted to the style that letterman created, but conan has developed his own style too, and it is pretty good. one knock against conan is that letterman's show was more interesting with the music bookings.

Maybe it is because I'm Welsh, but I hate both of these motherfuckers with a furious passion.

Their shows aren't on regularly in the UK to my knowledge but from what I've seen over the years they're almost indistinguishable.

Letterman used to be gurning about ITV on Friday nights. Incomprehensible.

Leno I saw a lot in Ireland, back when they used to broadcast American channels untouched on Sky.
