Well, the point I was trying to make is that there hasn't been a damn thing this century in hip hop that I've found remotely interesting. Heiro is horrible, the quannum camp is dull, the stellar Company flow song off of Soundbombing made me realize how disappointing their two records were, PE has been a joke since '91, most of the new non sampled beats on those "avant-hop" types (Cannibal Ox, Dalek et al) is just scattery noise that isn't fun.

I'd never reduce hiphop to Gangsta because I understand the difference. I also feel that calling Andre's the love below "hip hop" is just as marginalizing as equating hip hop with gangsta. It's got more weight.

ps. yes, destroying 'my favourite things' is certainly weighty. i'd agree that andre doesn't make hiphop though ('hey ya' isn't actually music, in fact, it's a complication-free test for SLS[stupid lassie syndrome])

As a woman, I usually do not have a problem with the use of "bitch" or "ho" in hip-hop. I actually find it no different than the surreal use of violence in the genre (why isn't anyone addressing that issue?).
I think I have more of a problem with a group of men passive agressively standing up for women on a web site devoted to sound recording. If you really have a problem with today's current outlook on women, then go to a youth center, volunteer, and teach young men how to respect women, and all people in general.

That was my last job. This is where I come to talk shit.

It seems that we get a lot of posts here (like the doude who was looking for the hot pick-up locales in Chicago) of folks that don't share the same ideals about respecting others and these are the kind of discussions that turn up amongst my friends (male and female) that I ffind rather interesting.

Part of the problem that I see is that when women walk down the street and some fucking jackass makes catcalls or what have you, they're trying to take away someone's dignity and assert some sort of dominance. Unfortunately rationalizing with said idiots never works (especially someone as scrawny as I) and sometimes discussing this shit makes me feel like I'm not totally alone in thinkning that other folks have value as well.

I know women can speak for themselves, It still pisses me off all the same.

I mean no offense at all.

They are part and parcel of the same issue; loss of power and status.

I don't really get the passive-aggressive part, but I don't apologize for standing up for women. Okay, so it's on a board "devoted" to sound recording, but I have a lot of respect for the people on this board, and so I feel like I can share my opinions with everyone and not be disrespected.

If you really have a problem with today's current outlook on women, then go to a youth center, volunteer, and teach young men how to respect women, and all people in general.

Or open a business in the poorer sections of your town. Follow the money!

I really do have a problem with the current outlook on women, but I don't think volunteering at a youth center is going to do it. It's a little bigger than that. In fact, it's much too big for me to take on and hold down a full-time job and try to get some music in there somehow. So, I lead by example and always question myself. Your post made me think about this topic for a while. I try not to support people who casually exploit women (or anybody for that matter) and I make it known to my friends and aquantances that certain attitudes will not be tolerated. We all do our part.
