i had used a couple reels of 1/4" 900 w/no problems earlier in the year [A810] - but am now fighting with a couple 2" reels w/problems similar to those already mentioned. [MTR90 III]

i guess what i've learned is to thoroughly test the tape stock in advance of the session and hopefully have enough backup laying around in case it is bad. now i have to get what's already on there off it so we can continue the session on the computer - frustrating.

ATR is shipping now at least...

I've also noticed problems with shedding. On my Tascam 38 we had awful session stopping problems with drop outs and high-end loss due to residue build-up until we finally started cleaning the machine after every few playbacks of a song. It was a real (pun intended) pain in the ass. We used some 1" on our MS-16 and experienced drop outs as well. It was certainly less severe, but it was enough to dump a project into Pro Tools when we were originally planning on staying on tape.

I got some ATR tape in, but just in time for my machine to break down so we haven't tried it out yet. I'm hoping to be done with RMG.

That's the exact same batch I had problems with, FWIW.

RMGI just sent replacement reels to me last week. Haven't had a chance to test it out yet.

sonofabitch! did you purchase thru us recording media? my reels were purchased back in october - if i were on it better i would have noticed earlier but the session started back then, then lagged before coming back for overdubs at my place where i really noticed the problems.

ha. glad to know i'm not crazy. i got the replacement reels the other day too but also haven't had time to check them. don morris called me and offered to stop in next week and have a look at the reels/machine in person. sucks about the product, but they're being stand-up in their customer service regarding the situation in my book. much more attentive/caring than i ever expected.

Yep, US Recording Media. Bought them in mid-October, I believe.

Phil @ RGMI has been perfectly helpful in dealing with this, too.

the replacement 1/4" rmg 900 they sent me is better, but still has high frequency fluctuations and dropouts. It's usable but does not instill confidence. Mostly wavering about +/- .5 dB at 10 KHz, with an occasional 1-2 dB dip.

I have some 90's 1/4" 3M 996 tape (similar to GP9) on the hub (no flanges) if anyone wants to buy some PM me. I'm not going to use them.
