Jello hasn't done fuck-all except complain about getting arrested. If he had changed the world, he would have had NOTHING to bitch about his whole career.

To his credit, the DK's were great, and he urged everyone to "question authority." Big deal... fuck my dad told me to question authorty.

Oh his label is honest (from what I can gather)...he has that going for him.

I don't understand your post. It contradicts itself. I guess you're saying he hasn't done enough to warrant consideration. but I'm not clear.

i read this as "if music doesn't "change your world..." and wanted to say i fully agree. you have no heart, sir.

Come on.....a jingle and a jangle on the old guitar, some precious pontificating about life in general, some boisterous shrill about the government or society in general....yawn. I like music a great deal, don't get me wrong. But I am kind of an idiot and not afraid to say so. Even I would be hard pressed to elevate music in any form, genre or time period to be capable of "changing my world" or even the world around me. It can be fun stuff, this music....but let's not get carried away.

When I was going through my teens, and my personality was forming - I lived in a shitty little inbred nasty fuckhole of a town, filled with nasty shitty little inbred people.

A lot of the guys I went to school with were more and more frequently denigrating minority groups (black and gay folks most notably) for fun and presumably to assert themselves.

I realised I was in a position where I had to decide which road my personality was gonna go down - should I do what it takes to fit right in with the assholes for the sake of the easy life?

Then, as it always does, along came indie-rock and made up my mind for me - the liner notes in 'In Utero' especially.

It said something like 'If you bash gays, blacks or women etc. - don't come to our shows or buy our records, we don't want you around.'

That was it. Mind made up. It simply wasn't cool to be an asshole, and I learned that there was another way of conducting oneself as a young man that I'd not really seen before.

So there ya go. If it weren't for indie-rock, I'd suck even more than I do now. And I'm guessing that I'm not the only person who experienced this effect, so - that's a little bit of the world changed for the better, right?

I think so. I went through the same thing. I started listening to bands whose members were opposed to racism, homophobia and the like and I became more and more disgusted with the people I knew who were bigoted and hateful. I realized that I did not want to be one of them. From then on, I didnt think putting people down because of their race, poking fun at homosexuals or beating up women was cool.

I dont believe music can change the world on a broad level, but it can bring about changes in individuals on a smaller level, as me and Mr. Food (ooh, its so good.) have sited.

Nursing however, has benefited society on a much broader level than music ever has. But, c'mon! Its nursing!

I don't think I'd be the person I am today without music. It has definetly shaped me on a cultural level. I would not be who I was without nursing either, because I would've gotten really sick and died when I was a wee one if doctors didnt know how to cure me.
