i thought the show at hi fi last night was awesome, but they dragged on about 20 mins too long.
apart from that it was great.
the mix was loud but not unbearable, clear but dirty.

boris were kinda boring.

So, other than saying something positive about Sunn O))) (presumably good), as opposed to something negative (presumably bad), your initial post is more valid than mine how exactly? Note that I only quoted the word loud from the opening post and subject from benjaminwayne, which I actually enjoyed very much. It captures some of that unbridled enthusiasm and excitement that can only be captured by enjoying a good live event, and is suitably infectious.

Two things about this thread irritated me enough to reply: The endless reiteration that Sunn O))) are indeed, really loud (specifically the implication that loud=good), and the postulation of a Sunn O))) concert as a rites of passage and threshold, of which only the non-hipster/scenester can pass. Replace the words 'Sunn O)))' with 'Metallica', 'scenester' with 'college faggot', and see how the thread scans.

I think Khanate were harsher on the ears than Sunn, I guess Khanate use higher frequencies which always sound nastier/more piercing.

I have to say in reply to some Boris comments that-they can be truly amazing live, like take your breath away amazing.

The loudest bands I have seen would be Motorhead, High on Fire and perhaps Part Chimp, all those bands seem to overdrive everything until equipment falls apart. Perhaps it was individual shows though.

jucifer puts on a better show. the sound is more impressive, and yes, i believe it to be louder. jucifer live is an awesome spectacle i highly recommend checking out at least once. the amp rig actually sounds as over the top as it looks.

sunn live is boring. i actually prefer sunn records because they have ear candy and stuff .

the one time i saw boris live it kicked ass for about 5 min and then went into a sorta boring dub-ish jam.

Yeah, I'm the opposite, I think Sunn are made for playing live, you need the physicality of the room/sound system to really let the music take hold, when all the sound waves surround you and are almost tangible, it's interesting, intense.

I've seen Sunn a few times and never found them to be excessively loud. When they played with Boris and Thrones at the Underworld in 2003 Boris were easily louder (also probably the best or second best Boris show I've seen). Both bands are great though, and rarely comparable.

I also saw Khanate play in Nottingham and they were underwhelmingly quiet, not to mention comical. The theatrics of their set really backfired, if you ask me. Guapo, on the other hand, tore the place up at that gig.

The Khanate gig at the Rescue Rooms was indeed shit. I saw them at the Custard Factory in Brum last year and it was immense...
