My prom date was a girl I'd been hanging out with for a while, but every time we set up an actual "date" something would happen, so it was the first actual "pick her up at her house and take her out to dinner" date we'd had together. He former boyfriend, a slab of beef psycho who quit school to join the Marines, returned home on his first leave the day before, and I learned he was very but very pissed off that Laura was going out with someone else. This put a bit of a damper on the evening, and it got worse when she informed me her bowling team had rescheduled a tournament so she had to home by 1:00 am so she could roll at 9:00 the next morning. After dropping off Laura (and getting no loving past a kiss on the cheek), I was too embarassed to go to any post-prom parties stag, so I went home, watched SLAP SHOT on HBO with my dad, and drank several bottles of Miller before going to bed.

In short, prom was total crap.

BTW, Laura ended up skipping her graduation ceremonies a year later to go see Muddy Waters open for Eric Clapton. I knew that girl had promise.

She's dead now.

Are you from Bergen County, NJ?

I was born there and lived there for nine years.

The Puerto Rico story and the NJ references made me think that, though that could happen in Short Hills as well

Well, isn't this something. I'm a high school junior from Short Hills. Junior prom is this Thursday night. I decided that I didn't feel like spending a few hundred dollars on something I probably wouldn't like, so I'm doing something cheap and aimless with a few friends.

I have, however, overheard some impossibly rich kids talking about their post-prom plans. Plenty of them (who I suppose are above the Jersey Shore) plan on going to the Hamptons.

I'm from Teaneck in Bergen County - this is QUITE weird, because I could never find anyone who listened to good music in that area...

I think I read that one of the Fugazi guys was from Teaneck too.
Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
