Frank Zappa could work his way around a wah wah. I enjoy how he used it more as a tone control, or to shape notes.

Mick Ronson was also good at this.

It is also fun at band practice to use a wah wah at very inappropriate moments to ensure a glare from the bass player, hee heeee.

Wah wah, NOT CRAP.

Pretty much. I mean cue up any random scene in SKOM, and just listen to him go waah, waah, waah about everything....

Not crap in the right hands,

large waffle factor for the fact that in certain songs I can all but hear the objectionable guitarist saying "hey, look at me I'm using a wah-wah pedal!"

I dislike the usage of wah-wah in "Conjure Me" by Afghan Whigs and "Blood" by Pearl Jam. These are vague, vaguely "adult" songs that are only likely to impress teenagers; on hearing these tracks for the first time I can imagine fifteen-year-olds going "Wow, that's a wah-wah".

It's often a very callow touch in a song; a signifier of bygone cool.

Another cool trick is tuning the resonance of a wah to the key you're in. Hit the root note, adjust the wah to a position that gives you some weird overtones, turn on a fuzz and get your weird on.
